Harriet Beecher Stowe
Stowe's book, Uncle Tom's Cabin responded to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and millions of copies were sold around the world in about 2 years. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Made Missouri a part of the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free one to balance Senate. Prohibited slavery north of 36°30′ in the Louisiana Purchase territory with Missouri as an exception. -
"Bleeding Kansas"
Began as argument over whether slavery should or should not be allowed in Kansas. It was fights between people for and against slavery. -
Dred Scott Decision
A slave named Dred Scott was taken into a free state by his master, but he could not become a citizen since he was recently a slave making him a slave even in free territories. Congress also concluded legislations limiting slavery were unconstitutional. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
A series of debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas where they argued about slavery. Lincoln lost the legislature but published his speeches in a book which became very popular and helped him become elected in 1860 for president. -
John Brown's Raid
Led an army of about 20 slaves to revolt against slave owners but were shut down by a group of U.S. Marines.
