Dred Scott was denied being freed of slavery by the Supreme Court. He had been living as a slave in a free state, but the court denied him freedom because he did not own any property. -
John Brown Raided Harper's Ferry
This event was very influential because John Brown and his sons attempted to raid an arsenal in Virginia in order to start a slave uprising, but when no slaves showed up, they were all captured. John Brown was later hanged. -
Abraham Lincoln was Elected President
This caused serious tension between the north and the south because no other president until Lincoln had believed so strongly in ending slavery.
