The Mexican War was was the first US armed conflict that occured on forign soil. Texas gained its independence from Mexico and Mexico lost half of its territory. The US gained land from Meico which led to disputes in the US over slave expansion and power balences between the north and south. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
The book Uncle Toms Cabin was the second best selling book in the US during this time. The book brought slavery to life for those who were not exposed to it and made slavery a more controversial topic. -
Bleeding Kansas
Popular sovereignty would be used to decide if Kansas would be a slave state or a free state. People came to Kansas to influence the decision. This resulted in violence as both sides fought for control. -
Harpers Ferry/John Brown
John Brown, a white abolishinist, left for Harpers Ferry with supporters in hope of starting a revolt. He believed that local slaves would know of his plan, which they did not. Brown captured citizens and seized the arsonal and federal armory. Brown was cauvht and hanged on December 2nd. -
Election Of 1860
Abraham Lincoln, a republican, was elected president of the United States. Lincoln did not win any of the souths votes because of his republican views. For example, republican did not support the growth of skavery. States began to plan their secession after Lincoln was elected. -
Secession Crisis
Eleven states in the south began to secede from the United States after the election of president Lincoln. Tgis crated the Confederate States of America.
