  • Missouri Compromise 1820

    Missouri Compromise 1820
    The Missouri Compromise was an agreement that banned slavery in Missouri. Throughout the compromise tensions between North and South expanded. The agreement resulted in benefiting the South more than the North. It did not benefit the north because their goal was to get rid of slavery but slavery was still in affect. It did benefit the South because they still had slavery open for them. For that reason the tensions grew between the North and South.

    The Annexation of Texas was the event in which Texas became apart of The United States. This event also created tensions between North because Texas was going to become a slave state. As being known, the northerners did not want that to occur. They tried avoiding any expansion of slavery because they didnt want slavery to happen at all. Southerners were agreeing to his idea so they can expand their slavery system. Andrew Jackson however didnt make no action to keep north and south steady.

    The Mexican American war was a war which occurred several times between Mexico and the U.S. The Wilmot Proviso was a law to ban slavery throughout all Mexico territory, the Wilmot Proviso took place during the Mexican War. The Wilmot Proviso causes tensions because it benefited the Northerners and not Southerners. The Northerners were in agreement with the Wilmot Proviso because their goal was exactly what the law said which was to ban slavery but the southerners were upset that slave decreased.

    The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was a treaty to end the war and conflict between Mexico and the U.S. This event created tension between the South and the North because they were not sure whether the new lands should be pro-slavery or anti slavery. Of course, the North would not want it to be a slave state but, the south would. The back and forth between both trying to make the new land anti/pro slavery increased the tension. The back and forth also lead to Americans going against each other.

    The California Gold Rush was an event where gold was found in California by James W. Marshall. About 3,000,000 people went to the Americas looking for gold. Gold was something that was a lack in this period, so when they heard it was gold in the area, people went nuts. The North and South tension satrted here also because the decision on whether or not California should be a slave state or non slave state. Immigrants began to crowd the United state as well.

    The Compromise of 1850 was a deal that the North and South came up with into the agreement of slavery. This did not create major tension between both sides but did create a little. The North were 100% against slavery but happen to agree to the Fugitive Slave Act. After the act was established the North were not liking the idea of it but even though having the compromise lowered down tension between both sides, the compromise didnt last long.

    The Underground Railroad was a network created by people who helped families escape from slavery. It happened before the civil war ended. This created tension between the North and the South because the North was in support of this idea. The South were loosing their slaves and interupting their system.

    The Fugitive Slave Act was a law created in the of the Compromise of 1850. The law allowed for the slaveholders to help captive of any slave and that tried to run away to a free state. This act saddened the North, to agree but see such hurtful things to innoncent people. The south were very careless to slaves and were glad the North agreed to such idea. The tension silently built up with the north.

    Uncle Toms cabin was a book published in 1852. The book held important and meaningful aspects in it during that time period. The publisher sold 300,000 copies in its first year being published. It spoke about the topic of slaves and slave heros. The North liked the book becuase it talks about the struggleand experience of being a slave where tho the South hated the boo, they said it was false information.

    The Caning of Sumner was a fight that happen between Preston Brooks (south) and Charles Sumner (north). Preston beats Charles with a cane because of a speech charles gave. This created tension because the North and South because Charles wanted Kannas to become involved int he ranks of pro slavery. As known as the South agreement because if such were to happen slavery would expand, but the North was highly against this concept.

    This was a series of confrontations/problems in America. Kansas was in debate on whether it should be a free slave state or not. This created tension because Kansas was a like to the free slave state, Missouri. It had the same rich soil and the same climate. The North attempted to race the South so Kansas can become a free slave state meanwhile the south for it to be a slave state.

    The Lecompton Constitution was a list of clauses protecting slaveholding and a bill of rights. This Constitution not only increased tension between both sides but it also added frictions to the us civil war. it permitted slavery, excluded blacks from living in Kansas, and allowed only male citizen of the US to vote. It caused tension between both sides because the constitution was legalized which allowed slavery. The north were very upset that they failed at overcoming the south.

    The John Brown Raid on Harpers Ferry was an event in which John created a small group with tat small group they attempted to destroy the intitution of slavery. The South was furious that they were trying to destroy their system. Also that he was from Virginia and backstabbed the south. Brown switched over to the North beliefs of being anti slavery which made the south hate him. The North liked his idea to convert his beliefs to expand anti slavery.
