  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    It was passed as a part of the Compromise of 1850. It stated that any federal official who didn't report a fugitive slave would be forced to pay a fine for his crimes. This encouraged the abolitionists to fight harder against slavery and caused a raise in the use of The Underground Railroad.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    It was written by abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe to show the life of a slave. It changed the view many northerners had on slavery. Even Abraham Lincoln acknowleged that it influenced the beginning of the war.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    This was passed to say that the Nebraska and Kansas territories could decide for themselves if they wanted to be slave or free states. This caused an outbreak of violence in Kansas for the next couple years as abolitionists and and pro-slavery activists fought for the future of the state of Kansas.

    Charles Sumner is Attacked by Preston Brooks
    One of the most famous events in "Bleeding Kansas". Charles Sumner was giving a speach that attacked pro-slavery activists, and Preston Brooks jumped up and beat him within the inch of his life with his cane.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott
    Dred Scott was a slave who's owner moved from his slave state of Missouri to the free state of Illinois. He then sued his owner, John Emerson, for his freedom, and lost the case. So he was a slave being held in a free state, proving that slavery couldn't be outlawed anywhere.
  • John Brown Raided Harper's Ferry

    John Brown Raided Harper's Ferry
    John Brown was an extreme abolitionist who had been involved in anti-slavery violence in Kansas. In 1859 he planned to steal a bunch of weapons and bring them to slaves in the south so they could kill their owners and all become free. He lead 17 men to raid Harper's Ferry, Virginia and they captured many buildings before being surrounded and they were all killed.
  • Abraham Lincoln Elected as President

    Abraham Lincoln Elected as President
    During the election, South Carolina warned that if Lincoln won, they would succeed from the United States. After he won they made good of that promised, along with 6 other states, and succeed from the United States. He also made the agreement with the government that no more states accepted into the Union could become slave states.
