St Louis, Oct. 23d/62 My Dear Wife We are here but dont expect to get off the boat but go on to Helena, Arkansas. We left Clinton late Monday evening. You can imagine the [hurah?] bustle & noise of 800 meni, stores, horses, [etc.?] going on board a boat by the light of a flambeau or two. • marine hoap

I have recd no letter for some days but cant wait any longer, as I know if you feel as I do when I get none, you would wish one written though none to answer. I have been wondering often how you were situated this cold weather as I know it must be there, and where you were, perhaps over at mothers. And how I have wished I could be at home to help you, and keep you warm & comfortable, hold you in my arms & tell you how I loved you.
