Fort Sumter
Major Robert Anderson and his garrison were in charge of Fort Sumter, which was in Charlestown, South Carolina. This fort remained under federal control and Lincoln was afraid if he left the fort the rebels would take it. But if Lincoln gave supplies to them then he would risk starting war. Then on April 12, 1861 at 4:30 am the Confederates attacled on the fort, marking the beginning of the Civil War. -
First Battle of Bull Run
The First Battle of Bull Run lasted one day and took place in Manassas, Virgina on July 21, 1861. The North commander was Irvin McDowell and the South commander was Piere Beauregard. The Confederates won (south) and got army recoginization after this battle. The North was suprised at the south's victory. This is also where Thomas J. Jackson, a confederate soldier, got his nickname "Stonewall Jackson". -
Battle of Hampton Roads
The Battle of Hampton Roads lasted two days startin on March 8, 1862 and ending on March 9, 1862. This battle was an ironclad battle in the Ocean with the Union commander was Lt. John Worden and the Confederate commander was Capt. Franklin Buchanan and Lt. Catesby R. Jones. The two ironclads fought but the Confederacy ironclad was drove back. -
Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh lasted two days starting on April 6, 1862 and ending on April 7, 1862, This battle took place in Tennesse with the North leader being Grant and the South leader being Johnston. The Union won this battle and got control of the Tennesse River so they could divide the South in half, Unfortunately they lost their leader, Johnston and the battle cost them a lot of money. -
Battle of Chanellorsville
The Battle of Chancellorsville lasted three days starting on May 2, 1862, and ending on May 4, 1862. This battle took place in Virginia with Joseph Hooker as the Union leader and Lee as the Confederate leader. The Confederates won even though Lee's army was outnumbered 2:1. Except Lee lost many men including Jackson. -
Second Battle of Bull Run
The Second Battle of Bull Run lasted two day and started on August 29, 1862 and ended on August 30, 1862. This battle took place in Manassas, Virginia and had Pope as the North commander and Jackson as the South commander. The Confederates won and got control of most Virginia. They also forced Union troops to withdraw back to Washington. -
Battle of Antietam
The battle of Antietam took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862. The Union leader was McClellan and the confederate leader was Lee. The outcome ended in a draw but seen as a political victory for the Union because it led to the Emancipation Proclamation. This was a one day battle. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
The Battle of Fredricksburg lasted one day and took place on December 13, 1862 in Virginia. The Union leader was Ambrose Burnside and the Confederate leader was Lee. The Confederates won and stopped the final Union advance. The Union lost many soldiers in this battle. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipatin Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln and freed all slaves in Confederate territory. Except it freed very few slaves. The Constitution did not give power to the president to free slaves within the Union. So Lincoln asked Congress to abolish slavery gradually throughout the land. -
Siege of Vicksburg
The Siege of Vicksburg lasted for nearly two months starting on May 18, 1863 and ending on July 4, 1863. This battle took place in Mississippi with the North leader being Ulysses S. Grant and the South leader being Pemberton. The Union won and got control of the Mississippi which would help them divide the South. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg lasted three days starting on July 1, 1863 and ending on July 3, 1863. This battle took place in Pennsylvania with George Meade as the Union commander and Lee as the Confederate commander. The Union won and the South never invaded the North again. Over 43,000 died in this battle and was when Lee sent Pickett to distract the middle of the Union line, which became the turning point. -
Siege of Atlanta
The Siege of Atlanta lasted falmost two months starting on July 16, 1864 and ending on September 2, 1864. The battle took place in Georgia with Sherman as the Union commander and Hood as the Confederate commander. The Union won this long battle and captured the "heart of south" and launched the "march to the sea". This battle also helped get Lincoln reelected as president. -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
The Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse was in a small town in Virginia and lasted one day which was on April 9, 1865. The Union leader was Ulysses S. Grant and the Confederate leader was Robert E. Lee. The Union won due to a surrender from the Confederate leader Lee. Lee was chased by Grant and though he wanted to keep fighting he knew his situation was hopeless. Grant offered generous terms of surrender and finally after four years the Civil War was over and the Union had won. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C, five days after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. The man who assassinated Lincoln was John Wilkes Booth, a confederate supporter. Booth was an actor during the play and crept into the balcony where Lincoln was and shot him in the back of the head. He then jumped over the railing and broke his leg whille doing so. However Booth was tracked down several days later and killed. Lincoln did not live to see the end of slavery. -
Ratification of the 13th Amendment
Abraham Lincoln wanted to see an end to slavery. So he had approved of a constitutional amendment to end of slavery but Congress denied it. So Lincoln kept urging Congress to pass it and finally by years end 27 states had passed it and then slavery was banned from the entire U.S.
