    Plan created to avert crisis between North and South.There were 5 specific parts to this plan- California admitted as a free state, New Mexico and Utah could decide whether free or slave state, No slave sales in Washington D.C, Texas would give up claim to New Mexico territory, the Fugitive Slave Act was taken into place.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Citizens were able to vote on if they wanted these states to be enslaved or not. This was known as "Bleeding Kansas" because of so many deaths from violent disputes.
  • Election of 1856

    Election of 1856
    The Republican party was formed, protesting slavery. James Buchanan (democrat) defeats John C. Freemont (newly formed Republican Party).
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    In 1857, Dred Scott (African American) fugitive was taken all the way to the Supreme Court and wanted justice. Chief Justice Roger Taney's response to this was "slaves were private property and thus no decision needs to be made."

    in 1860, Abraham Lincoln wins the presidential election with out winning any electoral votes from the South. This win outrages the South, causing South Carolina to leave the Union.

    The first battle of the war was the Battle of Bull Run in Virginia. This was won by the Confederates.
  • Antietam

    On September 17, 1862 the South attacks the North in Antietam, Maryland. Led by Lee, about 23,000 men were killed, causing this to be one of the deadliest battles of the war.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    President Abraham Lincoln announces the Emancipation Proclamation. This declared all slaves to be free on enslavement in North and South, taking effect January, 1 of 1863.
  • Chancellorsville

    At the battle of Chancellorsville, Lee took his greatest victory. He also lost a great soldier, "Stonewall" Jackson who was shot in left arm and died.
  • Gettysburg

    July 1-3, 1863 the Union won one of their first major battles. Within these 3 days, 50,000 men were killed. Because of this win, Abraham Lincoln said at the Gettysburg Address, "why we fight, dedication to those men."

    With Grant in charge of all Union forces, he ordered T. Sherman to lead this brutal attack. Known as "scorched earth" Sherman set fire and caused Total War from Atlanta to Savannah.
