    Senator Stephen Douglas introduced a bill that split the land west of Missouri into Nebraska and Kansas. The choice on whether or not they were slave territories were left up to the settlers to vote on.
  • Election of 1856

    Election of 1856
    former president Franklin Pierce was defeated in his effort to be re-nominated by the Democratic Party. The election itself was won by James Buchanan. James was a democrat and because he won the election the threat of secession in the country was temporarily avoided.

    The Dred Scott decision was when a slave felt as if he should of been free because he crossed over into free territory. He attempted to take his owner to court in lawsuit, but had no power because he was only seen as property and had no rights.

    Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as the 16th president of the United States. Abraham Lincoln was voted president even though his name was not on the ballets in the south. He was president during the entirety of the civil war before being assassinated by John Wilks Booth.

    The order sent from Abraham Lincoln that all slaves shall be set free. This caused the south to look like the "bad guys" keeping any outside sources from stepping in and assisting them in the war.

    A very famous speech made by Abraham Lincoln during the ceramony to dedicate a cemetery in Gettysburg. This speech helped the country realize that they were not just a collection of independent states, but a unified nation.

    Lee and Grant both arranged to a private meeting in a house where they made a simple agreement of surrender. All confederate officers were allowed to keep their side arms and within a month all confederate soldiers went home with their possessions.

    Abraham was out to have a nice night when he was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln died due to the injury 3 days later.
