Allowed the people of Kansas and Nebraska to chose for themselves if they wanted their state to be a free state or a slave state. -

A series of violent confrontations between pro-slavery and anti-slavery during the settling of Kansas. -
The Dred Scott Decision
A legal case in which a slave (Dred Scott) who had lived in a free state was not entitled to freedom and could never be a citizen of the US. He lived in Missouri and moved to the North in a free state. The court ruled that slaves are property and you can bring your property wherever you want, therefor he is still a slave. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
Debate of the two during the Illinois state election. Douglas made Lincoln look like an abolitionist even though he was a free soiler. -
Lincoln's Election
When Lincoln became the president, it was the final trigger for secession, meaning this is when the eleven southern states withdrew from the Union. This happened because the president of the southern states thought the Lincoln was going to stop the expansion of slavery and abolish it altogether. -
Fort Sumter
Confederate military open fired on Fort Sumter. This was the beginning of the Civil War. -

Harper's Ferry
John Brown led the three day battle of Harper's Ferry in an attempt to start an armed slave revolt to fight back against slavery and destroy slavery as a whole. -

A series of assaults to Robert E. Lee in Sharpsburg Maryland. "Bloodiest day of the war" -
Emancipation Proclamation
A document signed by President LIncoln to preserve the union, and to prevent further rebellion of the southern states.It was a strategy to help the Union win the war. The end goal was to abolish slavery. -
Gettysburg and Gettysburg Address
A speech given by President Lincoln in honor of the Union soldiers killed during the battle of Gettysburg.The battle was the last time the South invaded the North. -
Andersonville Prison
Also known as Camp Sumter, was the Confederates largest military prison for the captured Union soldiers. -

From 1865 to 1877 there was a reconstruction era to rebuild state and society. -
Surrender at Appomattox Court House
Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant which put an end to the war after four years. -
