The Invention of the Cotton Gin
The gin allowed plantation owners to make more money from cotton, so they planted more, and they needed more slaves to harvest the cottons. Without the cotton gin the slaves would've been abolished earlier. Eli Whitney was the inventor of the cotton gin. Click Here Document -
Missouri Compromise
Making the southern states slave states while northern states were free states.Many Missourians wanted to allow slavery in their state. The Missouri Compromise was meant to create balance between slave and non-slave states. Click Here Document -
The Liberator is published
Was a weekly newspaper published by William Lloyd Garrison in Boston, Massachusetts. The Liberator denounced the Compromise of 1850. Garrison was a journalistic crusader who advocated the immediate emancipation of all slaves and gained a national reputation for being one of the most radical of American abolitionists.

Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner's Rebellion was the most significant slave revolt in the United States history. Under the power of Nat Turner, a thirty-one-year-old religious mystic, a group of enslaved people in Southampton County, Virginia, conspired to strike the system. Sadly, Nat Turner was captured on October 30th, sentenced to death by hanging on November 5th after a brief trial and executed on November 11th. Click Here -
Tariff of 1828 & Nullification Crisis

Wilmot Proviso
Prohibited the expansion of slavery into any territory acquired by the United States. The Proviso sparked a sectarian debate in Congress that forced political leaders to make numerous compromises to determine the slave issue in newly acquired United States. Click Here -
Compromise of 1850

Uncle Tom's Cabin is Published
Is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, the novel "helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War." The novel sold 300,000 copies within three months and was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe in 1862, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.” Click Here -

Bleeding Kansas
During the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Stephen Douglas pushed for Nebraska and Kansas become official territories. For a railroad to come through they needed to be free states. 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' and the Fugitive Slave Act was established. This opened people's minds to how bad slavery was and even the ones who benefitted didn't want slavery to expand past where they were. Kansas-Nebraska Act
An act passed by the U.S Congress that allowed Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether they would want slavery allowed in their state borders. Used to repel the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a slave who wanted to be free. The Supreme Court was dominated by Southerners. A decision on the subject was difficult because the Northerners didn't want to decision when it was obvious they would lose. Brooks-Summer Event
Charles Summer made a two day long oral speech about insulting the southern governor and people in Kansas. Preston Brooks, angered from his cousin being insulted, beat Summer with his cane. Resulting in him paying a fine and having to resign from his position. Summer's seat in congress was left empty in his absence to recover to symbolize southern brutality. John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
Brown and his men captured many citizens and took hold of the arsenal and armory. Election of 1860

Three months into Lincoln's presidency, seven states had receded from the Union. The South was ready to form a new union. This union was known as the Confederacy.
