Battle of Bull Run

Jul 4, 1861

• Lincoln calls for 90 day enlistments
• Lincoln wants to take Confederate Capitol- Richmond VA
• Union winning first half but pushed back by Confederates
• Turning Point - North realizes not a short war and Lincoln calls for thousands of more volunteers, 3 year enlistment

Battle of Antietam

Sep 4, 1862

• Confederate General Lee attacks the North
• The single bloodiest day in Civil War- over 23,000 deaths
• Union victory, but don’t finish off Southern army
• Turning Point – Due to struggles of war Northerners begin looking for new reasons to fight

Battle of Gettysburg

Jul 8, 1863

• Lee invades the North
• Bring war North, convince them to call for peace, and secure European aide
• 1/3 of army – Picketts Charge
• Turning Point – Lee loses ability play offense and stays on defense

Siege of Vicksburg

Jul 10, 1863

• Confederate guns controlled river
• 43-day siege of Mississippi stronghold
• Union gains complete control of Mississippi River
• Turning Point – Completes the Anaconda Plan/Grant is promoted to Union General

Sherman's March

Sep 12, 1864

• Marched through Georgia destroying all war resources and burning down Atlanta

• Destroyed a path 60 miles wide through Georgia
• Helped Lincoln reelected
• Turning Point – Used total war to destroy everything of military value and destroy Southern will

Appomattox

Apr 12, 1865

• Grant puts of Petersburg under a 10-month siege
• Lee is forced to surrender as the Union broke through his defenses capturing Petersburg and Richmond
• Grant’s surrender terms-lay down weapons, keep possessions, and there will be no trial for treason
• Officially ends the Civil War on Apriol 9, 1865
