Nat Turner's Rebellion
A slave rebellion that took place in Southampton County, Virginia, during August 1831. Rebel slaves killed from 55 to 65 people, the highest number of fatalities caused by any slave uprising. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this book and it raised awareness in the north and angered the south. -
Harper's Ferry
An attempt by John Brown to seize arms and lead a slave revolt. The south was enraged by the north's support of his attempt. -
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln won the election but not the popular vote, which angered the south. Immediately following it, South Carolina seceded, and other southern staes held conventions on whether or not to secede. -
Fort Sumter
This is the first battle of the civil war. The confederates fired on a union supply ship, which resulted in a 23-hour cannon fight. There were no casualties. -
Battle of Bull Run
The union strongly expected an easy victory, so much so that there were spectators. The confederates held their ground like a "stone wall", which is where Stonewall Jackson got his name. -
Battle at Shiloh
The confederates tried to beat a union army before they could get reinforcements, but the union army was in a perfect position and won. After this victory they controlled one of the main train hubs. -
Antietam
This is the south's attempt to invade the north. There was no winner, but lincoln claimed a victory, which led to the emancipation proclamation. -
Fredricksburg
Both armies were huge, amounting to 20,000 men total. The union was trying to invade Virginia, but was pushed back so the confederates won. -
Chancellorsville
Union general Joseph Hooker was boasting that he would win. When the battle came, the union army was smashed. It was a costly win because Thomas Jackson died. -
Gettysburg
The confederates try to invade the north again. They fail once more, which brings down morale. This is one of the major turning points in the war. -
vicksburg
The union army tried to conquer vicksburg, but was pushed back. They then tried to siege it and the confederates starved and surrendered. -
Atlanta
The union army gained control of a train hub, which meant the confederates couldn't get supplies. The union army took atlanta. This need to Sherman's march to the sea. -
Surrender at Appotomax
General Lee was trapped at Appomatax court house. General Lee surrender his remaining army to General Grant. -
Black Codes Enforced
Laws passed by Southern states in 1865 and 1866, after the Civil War. They had the intent and the effect of restricting African Americans' freedom and forcing them to work. -
15th Amendment Ratified
Prohibits the federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's race.This led to African American senators and state leaders.
