Compromise of 1850
California entered as a free state. Utah and New Mexico were allowed to vote on slavery. Republic of Texas gave up the lands that may comprise New Mexico and recieved money to pay its debts. Slave trade was abolished in the district of Columbia. The Federal Slave Act was introduced which made people in free states responsible for aprehending runaway slaves. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
This brought the moral attrocities of slavery to the attention of a wider audience. -
Republican Party
This was when the Republican Party was formed. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
This Act allowed for the possibility of slavery where it had previously been not allowed by the Missouri Compromise. The new territories of Kansas and Nebraska were created. The matter of slavery was voted upon. -
Dred Scott v. Sandford
This case ruled that no african american whether free or not would be citizens. Furthermore, the United States government did not have the authority to regulate slavery in federal territories. -
Brooks attacks Sumner
This further accentuated the political and social divisions between the north and the south. Brooks was supported in the south but villified in the north. -

John Brown, a radical white abolitionist, attempted to start an armed slave revolt. -
