    The Civil War Begins
    The Civil War began in a reaction to the secession of southern states from the U.S.. The act of southern secession was a direct result from the election of 1860, where a large majority of southerners voted against President Lincoln and he still came out on top.
  • The Confederacy is Established

    The Confederacy is Established
    The Confederacy (formed from seceded states) is formed and ready for battle against the Union (the remaining states [technically still a part of the U.S.]).
  • The First Battle, The Battle of Fort Sumter

    A day after taking office Lincoln received a message reading that the Confederate soldiers had attacked and demanded surrender from the Union.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    First Battle of Bull Run
    Tension mounted, leading the first major battle of the Civil War. 30,000 Union troops attacked a small confederate force.
  • Two Very Different Sides

    The war began to divide many families, and no one believed the results would be so tragic
  • The Battle of Shiloh

    The Battle of Shiloh
    General Grant lead 40,000 troops towards Mississippi. Both armies suffered more than 23,000 casualties. The Union remained victorious.

    Lee's forces invaded Union territory and began too attack off of there homeland.
  • Capturing New Orleans

    Capturing New Orleans
    Another one of the North's key victories. Union Naval forces under David Farragut captured New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • The Battle of Antietam

    Once in Maryland Lee split his troops into four parts. To confuse the opposing side he told them all to go different directions. The Union came out victorious.
  • The Emancipation Proclomation

    The Emancipation Proclamation, helping against slavery.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg
    This was one of the biggest battles of the Civil War and it almost happened by accident. The confederacy entered the land looking for supplies hoping to avoid battle when they were attacked by the union. There were over 50,000 casualties total.
  • The War Ends

    The goal of the war for the Union was to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond. Grant finally drove Lee out of that city, ending the war.
