  • The Nullification Crisis

    The south thought that the Tariff Laws of 1828-1832 were only passed to the south, so Vice President John C. Calhoun said that anyone can nullify(or void)an unconstitutional law. Federal GOVT's denied this statement and South Carolina threatened to secede. After Henry Clay came up with a compromise to lower the tariff.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The Congress had a meeting about the territories won from mexico. California would be a free state, and slave trade in Washington D.C. would be abolished. Congress said that they would not pass the laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories. A few people believed that it helped save/supported the Union.
  • Fugitive Slave Act of 1850

    If any slaves escape the south, and go to the north, people in the north are allowed to capture the slaves, bring them to the south, and get a reward.
  • Bleeding Kansas 1855

    5000 pro slavery people voted for pro slavery representatives and they did it illegally. Anti-slavery made their own government and the pro slavery group opposed that by attacking the government. In conclusion to that attack John Brown murdered several of his own neighbors of the pro slavery act.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a former slave that sued for his own freedom. Dred was the property of his owner and couldn't be taken away without the due process of law. He was apart of a case as well that said that African Americans weren't citizens until the constitution was signed it 1787.
  • Attack on Harpers Ferry

    Attack on Harpers Ferry
    When John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their own freedom, he planned to capture an arsenal in Virginia to arm the slaves. When they tried, they failed, got captured and ten of them died.
  • Election of 1860

    Abraham Lincoln won the election, and when he said nothing to end slavery, the southerners still did not trust him. Afterwards, the southerners decided to secede from the union.
  • Missouri Compromise of 1820

    Missouri Compromise of 1820
    Missouri wanted to become a slave state while Maine wanted to become a free state. The Missouri compromise that allowed the states to become free or slave states.
