Texas' role in The Civil War

  • Battle of Galveston

    Battle of Galveston
In 1862, Commander William B. Renshaw led his squadron to demand the surrender of Galveston harbor. The Confederate army removed most of their heavy artillery, and the Union took control of the harbor. Finally, 264 men arrived in December to occupy Kuhn's Wharf and patrol the town.

In September 1863, the Davis Guards, an artillery unit of only 47 men, defeated more than 4000 Union soldiers and 20 warships in the Battle of Sabine Pass. The superior information obtained by the Confederates and the geography of the pass were the primary reasons for their victory. The battle did not alter the outcome of the war, but a successful Union invasion could have resulted in the capture of much of East Texas.
