Election of Abraham Lincoln
The Republicans chose Lincoln over William Seward after he promised to keep slavery where it already existed. He got the most electoral votes and won popular vote. He declared the South to be in a state of rebellion and asked for over 75,000 troops to help fight it. -
Battle of Fort Sumter
A federal outpost in Charleston, SC was attacked by Confederate troops. It began the civil war when the troops refused to leave. Lincoln sent ships and supplies to help defend the fort. The battle lasted 34 hours until the fort surrendered. -

It was a single-day battle. It is known as the bloodiest war in history due to the fact that more soldiers were killed during this battle than Americans in the Revolution, Mexican-American war, and the war of 1812 all together. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This document was presented by Abraham Lincoln in September 1862, but didn't go into effect until January 1, 1863. The document states that all slaves in the Southern states were declared as free. The document is important due to the fact that it made history take another turn towards the freedom of slaves. -

During this battle, the Confederacy and the Union crossed paths in the town of Gettysburg. The tide turned against the Confederacy in this three-day battle. Both sides lost a tremendous amount of troops. -

The Gettysburg Address was a speech given by Abraham Lincoln. In this speech he honored the battles that the troops have fought in and talked about the civil war opening the country up to freedom. -
