Northwest ordinance
The Northwest Ordinance was an act of the Congress of the Confederation of the United States, passed July 13, 1787. The effect that the Northwest Ordinance had on sectionalism and secession was the creation of the Northwest Territory as the first organized territory of the United States out of the region south of the Great Lakes, north and west of the Ohio River, and east of the Mississippi River. -
3/5 Compromise
The 3/5 Compromise stated that a slave would count as 3/5 of a person in terms of both taxation and representation. It was called a compromise because it settled the ongoing arguments over regional power between the North and South. Therefore, they compromised that a slave would be counted as 3/5 of a person towards the total population. The effect that it had on secssesion and sectionalism is that it effected the southern states slave rights.This could of been the reason why south left union. -
Cotton Gin
The Cotton Gin was a machine that quickly and easily separates cotton fibers from their seeds, a job that otherwise must be performed by hand. The fibers are processed into clothing or other cotton goods, and any undamaged seeds may be used to grow more cotton or to produce cottonseed oil. Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was an agreement passed in 1820 between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in the United States Congress, involving primarily the regulation of slavery in the western territories. The impact that this had on sectionalism and secession was that it prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36°30′ north except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri. Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was a package of five bills, passed in September 1850, they ended a four-year confrontation between the slave states of the South and the free states of the North. They were regarding the territories acquired during the Mexican-American War. This event dealed with sectionalism and secerssion because it dealed with the land that was aquired in ther Mexican-American war, but also regarding slave states. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Toms Cabin is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was published in 1852. The book lay the groundwork for the Civil War.Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best selling book of the 19th century and the second best selling book of that century, It is credited with helping the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. This helped sectionalism and secession buy bringing the slavery issues up front so people would see what it was like go e and go againt slavery. -
Dred Scott vs. Sanford
Dred Scott was a Missouri slave. Scott was taken to Illinois which was a free State. When Emerson died in 1843, Scott sued Emerson's wife for his freedom in the Missouri court. He claimed that his residence in the “free soil” of Illinois made him a free man. Scott lost his trial and remained a slave. This events impact on sectionalism and secession was that a slave could not move to a free state and become a free man, even on free soil.
