    Abraham Lincoln, was elected president in 1860 under the political party of Republician. Which outrage the south and in only six weeks South Carolina was the first to break away from the union. Setting off the next events, that are now known as, the Civil War.
  • The Confederate States of America is Formed

    The Confederate States of America is Formed
    By now a few states have left the Union, to be independent. On Febuary 4, 1861, 7 delegates from these states met, at the Alabama State captial building which later served as the first captiol for the Confedercy. This meeting was the birth of the Confedercy.

    The first battle of Bull Run, was the first major battle of the Civil War. The war did two things. It gave Confederecy's first victory of the war, and it showed to the rest of the nation the reality of the war. That ths is a real war, and not going to be an easy one.
  • Battle of Pea Ridge

    Gen. Earl Van Dorn, went to out flanked the Union at the Pea Ridge. The act of these battles killed Gen. Ben McCulloch and Gen. James McQueen McIntosh, the Confedercy has won at first, however the Union forces grouped up again and uses of the Union's artillery, shifted the power in their favour. Earl Van Dorn ran out of ammo and had to leave the battlefield. The Union controlled Missouri for the next two years. (March 6-8, 1862)

    USS Monitor v. CSS Virginia
    The two ironclad ships met at Hampton Roads, at dawn. This would be the first time that both of these iron ships have met. This battle ended in a stalemate, an evenly matched battle, both using their armour to their advantage. Even though the Union's officer did get hit, there was no winner in this battle.

    Battle of Shiloh occured on April 6th and ended the next day on the 7th, in 1862. Albert Sidney Johnston and his 40,000 troops came out of the woods and attacked the Union camp. Suprised and out gunned, the Union fell back but made good strong lines to hold their ground. Ulysses S. Grant was in trouble, however their alltiery and other resources fought the confederecy off. What could of been the biggest victory to the confederecy, was a failure in the end.

    The capture of New Orleans changed the war right when the Union took control. New Orleans from the begining of the war was the Confedercy biggest city, and the most important city that the Confedercy owned. Trading port, shipbuilding, and most importanly it was the control of the mississippi river. After the Confedercy lost in the time of, 18-29 April 1862 the war wasn't going to be the same.

    The Battle of Seven Pines (Fair Oaks)
    Joseph E. Johnston attacked two Federal corps that appeared isolated south of the Chickahominy River. arrived, and both sides fed more and more troops into battle. Gen. Johnston was wounded from this battle, both sides claimed victory from this battle. Union suffered, 5,739 Confedercy 7,997. (May 31-June 1, 1862)
  • Seven Days Battle

    Seven Days Battle
    The seven days battle started on June 25th and it ended July 1. McCllelan's forces advanced to Richmond and were 15 miles away. Robert E. Lee lead his troops to go attack McCllelan's, all though the Union were victorious, he withdrawed. Lee didn't stop there, he then attacked again splitting the Union lines. More and more battles happend after that. Lee was successful of protecting Richmond once again from the Union.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    As the Civil War is entering the thrid year, Lincoln proclaimed the Emancipation Proclamation, which stated that every slave in the rrebellious states (confederecy) were free and shall always be free.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    Union generals Berry and Whipple and Confederate general Paxton were killed in this battle. And this battle is considered the greatest battle that Gen. Lee won during the Civil War. It was a bloody war, 24,00 thousands Casualties, 14,000 Union and 10,000 Confedercy. (April 30-May 6, 1863)

    West Virgina was apart of Virgina, and the eastern part of Virgina was very different the west part. Eastern Virgina were the ones with the plantations and all the slaves, when the Civil War broke out they were the ones that wanted to leave the union. And they did, however West Virgina did not like that so they decided to finially break free of Virgina and stay with the Union.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    Robert E. Lee of the confederate army tried to evade the north. He met the Union army at Gettysburg, lead by George G. Meade. At first the confederate army was winning pushing the union soldiers back to Cemetery Hill. However on the third day, the Union counter-attacked and pushed the confederate back, gaining back the land that they just lost. Which lead to the confederates to do one more massive charge, called Pickett’s Charge, overall winning the battle.
  • Battle of Chickamauga

    Rosecrans was determinded to get the Confedercy out of Chickmauga and take control of it for the Union. He did take it over, however he got greedy and went after the Confedercy and fought them in a battle. He lost the battle turning back to Chickmauga, the Confedercy might of won the battle, and took control of the Heights around Chickamauga. but Union got control of the town. ( September 18-20, 1863)

    The Gettysburg Address is considered the most famous speech from the great President Lincoln. The speech was to talk about the lives that were lost in the Battle of Gettysburg, and that this civil war is a test of our nation.
  • Battle of Spotsylvania

    Battle of Spotsylvania
    Grant and Meade's advanced to Richmond in attempt to take it over, however the Confedercy went to Sportsylvania Court House to stall the Union from reaching Richmond. A series of battle occured there, letting the Union to capture some of Lee's forces cutting the army in half. However after a few more battles, between May 8-21, 1864, the Confedercy closed that gap.

    Voters in the north endrose votion for Lincoln for his second term. With his re-election all hopes of a treaty, or a settlement with the confederecy dissappeared. The union was not going to back down with Lincoln as President, and they didn't.

    The surrender of Lee to Grant was simple. Grant out numbered Lee by very much, and Lee knew right away that it was the end. After a long wait, Grant and Lee met face to face, to talk about surrendering terms. Lee surrendered after talking with Grant in a sad down fall for the Confedercy General.

    Lincoln and his wife went to see a play, a comedy called Our American Cousin. Lincoln woke up that day in a great mood, considering several days ago Robert E. Lee surrendered and Lincoln was now waiting for North Carolina to do the same. Lincoln was having a good day at the play, during the third act however John Wilkes Booth had other plans, and rushed behing Lincoln and shot him in the back of the head. Lincoln was rushed across the street at Peters House, he died a few days later.
