The events leading up to the CIvil War -
First Slave in Arrives in America
Slavery in America went on for almost 200 years befor the CIvil War. Starting in 1619 and ending in 1819. -
The Tallmadge Amendment
This document stated that Missouri should come in as a free state or not become a state at all. -
Missouri Applies for Statehood
Missouri applies to the U.S. for Statehood, but asks to be made a slave state. -
Missouri Compromise
MIssouri was made a slave state but Maine was made a free state. Congress also drew an imanginary line at 36'30. -
Gag Rule
The Gag rule prevented Congress from discussing anti-slavery. -
Wilmot Proviso
This act stated that neither slavery or involuntary servitude would ever exist in any land that we got from Mexico. -
California Applies for Statehood
Californis applies for Statehood, but wants to come in as a free state. -
Compromise of 1850
- The North got California
- The South got New Mexico and Utah -No slave trade in Washington but the slaves owners there could keep their slaves -The fugitive law was to be put in action

Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
Uncle Tom's cabin was book published by Harriet Beecher, it helped to open the eyes of the North about what was really happening to slaves in the south. -
Brook's Attacks Sumner in Congress
Brooks a southerner, attacked Sumner, a northerner with his cane. WHen the other man finally taken him off, Sumner had already unconscious and bloody on the floor. Brooks cane had been broken on Sumner's head, and many Southerners had sent him canes to show their report. For the north this was just another example of how badly things had gotten in the U.S. -
Dred Scott Decision
One slave after being taken to a free case, went to the court to ask if he was now a free man. The court said no and that he shouldn't have asked in the first place because he wasn't a citizen. Congress made a new rule that allowed slave owners to take their slaves into free states and not worry about losing their property. -
John Brown's Raid
John Brown and his sons tried to break into a federal arsenal and arm slaves with guns. Brown's son were all killed during the attack and he was later hanged, a hero to the North, and an assasin to the South. -
Lincoln Elected President
In 1860 Lincoln was finally elected president, one year before the Civil War. -
South Fires on the North
The south fires on the north at North at Fort Sumter, they won that battle, but the war was far from over.
