When an army of 30,000 unexperienced Union soldiers with General Irvin McDowell attacked the Confederate troops commanded by General P.G.T. Beauregard. The Confederates drove the Union army to retreat. -

When Lee and his Confedrate troops surrendered to General Grant in a small village in Virgina called Aooimattox Court House. Grant allowed the Confedrate soldiers to go home freely, as long as they laid down their arms or in other words guns and other weapons.
