Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon sold 828,000 of land west of the Mississippi river to the United States of 'Murica for $15 million. This purchase was seen as Thomas S. Jefferson's greatest accomplishment and nearly doubled the size of the U.S. -
Indian Removal Act
Signed by President Andrew Jackson. Relocated all indians west of the Mississippi river to settled lands within the settled border so Americans could settle in the west (indians' territory) -
Formation of the Confederate States of 'Merica
South Carolina proposed to secede from the already existing union, to form the Confederate States of America with the following states: Mississippi, Florida, Alabama,Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. This group of states was better known as the Confederacy. Its constitution gave its people the right to own slaves. This event eventually led to the civil war. -
Battle of Antietam
This Civil War battle was the bloodiest single-day battle in the war, and the United States history. The number of casualties injured, missing, or dead was greater than all of the Americans in the American Revolution,War of 1812, and the Mexican-American War combined.This battle also stopped General Robert E. Lee's advance north and helped the Union eventually win the Civil War. -
Emancipation Proclamation
President Lincoln wrote this document in order to free all slaves in the south. This helped the Union in the war because they recieved many more casualties after it was passed. This helped because the number of casualties was climbing and the Union needed more troops. This also helped create the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. -
Siege of Vicksburg
This attack on the city of Vicksburg was to get the Confederate city to surrender to the Union. This attack consisted of shelling the ciy repeatedly, and cuuting off the city's ports. This caused starvation in the city and led the Vicksburg citizens to eat dogs, rats, and horses in order to survive. This was one of the events in the Civil War that helped the Union eventually win the war. -
Battle of Gettysburg
A three day battle that was the bloodiest battle of the Civil war. In these three days more than 51000 casualties were injured, missng, or killed. This battle was an important victory for the Union because it, like the Battle of Antieam, stopped General Rbert E Lee's advance north.The Gettysburg Adress was written by President Lincoln after this battle to praise and honor the soldies that had fallen in the battle and made Gettysburg their burial place. -
The 13th Amendment
Officially ended the institution of slavery. It said: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -
Fourteenth Amendment
Gave citizenship to all recently freed slaves, and any person born in the United States of 'Murica. It also gave freed slaves equal rights, saying nobody will be denied "life, liberty or property, without due process of law" or "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” -
Fifteenth Amendment
It granted the right to vote to all African 'Murican men. Was not even fully recognized, or carried out until nearly a century later. -
Bleeding Kansas
Guerilla warfare was a problem because some people wanted Kansas to be a slave state, and some wanted it to be a free state, and they would tryy to get that any way possible.
