This Bill, introducesd by Stephen Douglas, proposed that the Nebraska Territory would be divided into two territories; Kansas and Nebraska. The settlers in the two territories have the choice of desciding if they are a free state or a slave state (popular sovereignty). Both territories were loceated north of the 36 degree 30' line, which was established by the Missouri Compromise of 1820. This new bill gave an opportunity that hasn't been given to them before. -

In 1856 Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner gave a speech that attacked the Democratic administration ("The Crime Against Kansas"). The speech included personal charges against Senator Andrew Butler of South Carolina. Butler's nephew, Preston Brooks, defended his uncle by beating Sumner with a cane in Sumner's chamber. His actoins infuriated the South but was supported by the South. This incident was another sign of the division between the North and South. -

On the South side there is a a farmer standing next to the paper. The cartoon shows that the conflict over slavery is tearing the Unithe States apart, seperating it into two sides, north and south. -
The Election of 1860 (Cause of War)
Abraham Lincoln represented the Republican Party in the Election or 1860. He believed that slavery was immoral, "This government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free," -Lincoln. His position infuriated the South. So when he won the election by having 180 Electoral votes and 1,886,000 popular votes, the southern states immediately began seceding from the union. This caused the North and South to split even more and agression to increase. -

This cartoon shows the different ways Lincoln is perceived in the north and south. The Northerners see Lincoln as a problem solver and a respected man. A man trying a keep the peace between the north and south. Where as the Southerners see Lincoln as an oppressor, who is completely against slavey, the only thing the southerners need. They see him as a many that wants to start war. The Northerners and Southerners have opposite perception of Lincoln. -

The North controlled most of the banking and captial of the country. Over 85 percent of factories and manufactured goods, over 70 percent of the railroads and 65 percent of the farms occupied northern territory. Nothern clerks and bookkeepers helped with the logistics of the war. Unlike the south, the north had a lot more support during the war, which gave them a great advandage. -

When the men left for the war, women filled in their shoes back home. When the military called for shoes and clothing, numerous women took in employment in factories. Other women decided to fight on the front lines, more than 400 women accompanied their lovers on the battle field dressed up like men. Some even went as dangerous as going on spy missions. -

Witha quick response, the southerners opened fire, and thus the war began. After two days Fort Sumter was under Confederate's power. -

Battle of Bull was the first major battle pf the Civil War. 30,00 fedral troops marched from Washington D.C. to attack the Confedrate army that was positioned near Bull Run Creek, Virginia. Just when the Union thought they had the lead, Confedrate reinforcements under Jackson Stonewalls command counterattacked the Union troops. Panicing the union troops retreated back to Washington. This battle gave the illusion that the war would end quickly, with the Confederate's victory. -

After the win of the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Before the the new year, lincoln warned all slaves the lived in rebellion states would be "then, thenceforward, and forever free." The Proclamation stated that all slaves with in designated States and parts od States will be free. And the Executive Government of the United States will protect slaves' freedom. -

Battle of Gettysburg (Battles of the War)
Lee lead his Confedrate army into enemy territories, Maryland and Pennyslvania. If he was able to capture the Union army or a major northern city, he hoped for the North to call for peace. On July 1, 1863 the invading Confedrate army surprised the Union army in the town of Gettysburg. With the Union army being in shock, Pickett (Commander of the Union army) called for a charge that destroyed a huge part of the Confedrate army. What was left of Lee's, retreated to Virginia. -

After the bloody Battle of Gettsyburg, Lincoln was asked last mintute to come to speak to the people. In Lincoln's speech he gave the idea that their nation was created of all equal men and that there is a "new birth of freedom". This all maybe relating to his Emancipation Proclamation(freeing slaves). His speech inspired people and the government as a whole to do better. Unexpectedly Abraham Lincoln's speech, The Gettysburg Address, became one of the most imporant and famous speech in America.
