Brown v Board of Education
Brown v Board of Education was a battle for schools to be public for blacks and whites at the same school. A decision was made that it is unconstitutional for blacks and whites to have separate schools. -
White Citizens Council
The White Citizens Council was a group of white supremacists that were mainly based in the south and there goal was to go back st states rights theses people were known as dixies. -
Lynching of Emmett Till
Emmett Till was a 14 year old boy that had been accused of offending a women at a store. Later he was lynched on August 28th, 1955. -
Rosa Parks Arrested
Many believe that Rosa Parks was the spark of the civil rights movement. One day Rosa Parks sat on a bus in the white people section and was told to move by the bus driver for a white person and she refused and got arrested. -
Montgomery bus boycott
The Montgomery bus boycott started on December 5th, 1955 and ended December 20th, 1956. The Montgomery bus boycott was a protest against the racial segregation of public transit. -
Eisenhower sends in Federal Troops
In 1957 nine black students were chosen to attend a white public school also known as the little rock nine. On the first couple days it got out of hand with swarms of white people elling and screaming and even trying to get to the kids, but eventually troops were called in and had to guard the school and each black student got there own troop by there side the whole time. -
SCLC Founded
On January 10th, 1957 SCLC was founded, which stands for Southern Christian Leadership conference. Martin Luther King jr. played a big role in this association and played a big role in the civil rights movement. -
SNCC Formed
The SNCC was a student nonviolent coordinating committee, was one of the first of the students sit-ins. -
Greensboro sit ins
The Greensboro sit ins were non violent protests by African Americans that made it so that Woolworth would remove its racial segregation policy, Thes protests started on Febary 1st, 1960 and was passed on July 25th, 1960. -
Albany Georgia “failure”
The Albany movement was a movement that formed a coalition on desegregation and voters rights, located in Albany, Georgia. -
White mob attacks federal marshals in Montgomery
The White mob attacks were a series of attacks on civil rights activists called freedom riders. The freedom riders were headed down south to go to the supreme court cases. -
Freedom Rides
Freedom riders were civil rights activists who would ride a bus down south to participate in the Morgan v. Virginia and Boynton v. Virginia supreme court decisions. -
Bailey v Patterson
this made it so that states did not have to require a racial segregation of interstate. -
MLK goes to a Birmingham jail
Martin Luther King jr. was holding peaceful protest about how blacks are treated in Birmingham and was sent to jail because he was told that he could not protest in Birmingham. -
Equal Pay Act
The equal pay act made it so that whether you were black or white, male or female that you would be getting paid equal pay if you were doing equal work. -
Assassination of Medgar Evers
Medgar Evers was a leader of the NAACP and the civil rights movement, sadly at age 42 he was assassinated by De La Beckwith who was a kkk member and a white supremacist. -
March on Washington “I have a Dream”
The march on Washington was held by Martin Luther King jr.. At that time on August 28th, 1963 Martin Luther King jr. gave the "I have a dream" speech and it was about how he has a dream that one day all will be equal and that we will all get along and have jobs and act like human beings. -
Assassination of John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy was a great president from January 20, 1961- November 22, 1963 and recived the purple heart, presedential metal of freedom and many more. Sadly he got shot on November 22, 1963 at the presidential motorcade in Dallas. -
Killing of Goodman, Chaney, Schwerner
In June of 1964 in the civil rights movement Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner were murdered. They were killed because they were working to try and give African Americans voting rights as a stap towards equality. Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner were all apart of the COFO and CORE. -
Freedom Summer
The Freedom Summer was a campaign that took volunteers and tried to get as many African American to vote as possible in Mississippi. -
XXIV (24th) Amendmen
The 24th amendment was ratified on January 23rd, 1964. It made it so there was no poll tax for voting anymore so it would make more people wanna vote due to the poverty that was going on in the black community. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a law passed that made a great impact on the civil rights movement. It made it easier to get jobs if you were African American because it made it so work places couldn't turn you down for a job just because of race or religion. It also banned public segregation. -
Assassination of Malcolm X
Malcolm X was definitely a big supporters in the civil rights movement. He was assassinated right before he was about to give a speech on his new organization he started up called Organization of Afro-American Unity. -
Selma to Montgomery March
The Selma to Montgomery March were a series of three marches along a highway. The Selma to Montgomery March was a peaceful protest by civil rights activists protesting there right to vote. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 would make it o that African Americans can vote and it would back up the 15th amendment. This act was signed off by lyndon B. Johnson. -
Black Panthers Formed
The Black Panthers Party was made on October 15th, 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The main goal of the Black Panthers Party was to fight police brutality. -
Loving v Virginia
Loving v Virginia was an act that allowed couples of different race to get married. This started when a man and women of different color ere sentenced for a year in prison ecause they were different color. -
Minneapolis Riots
On July 19th, 1967 a riot broke out in North Minneapolis on plymouth ave. There was 24 injured and one dead. The riot started due to racial tension. -
Assassination of MLK
Martin Luther king jr. was one who sought to make the world a better place. MLK was one of the biggest leaders in the civil rights movement, sadly MLK was murdered on April 4th, 1968 at the Loraine Motel in Tennessee. -
Assassination of Robert “Bobby” Kennedy
On June 5th, 1968 Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. Robert was one of the candidates for the 1968 election and had already won the California primary election.
