  • Emmett Till

    14-year-old African American that was lynched by a white woman for "disrespecting her".
    Important because it showed the cruelty and lack of safety African Americans' lives were.

    Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Boycott of public transport.
    Boycotted racial segregation on the public transit system in Montgomery.
  • Civil Rights act of 1957

    First federal civil rights legislation passed by Congress.
    Gave more people the right to vote, and removed interference.
  • Little Rock Nine

    Group of NINE African American students who enrolled into a white school.
    Resulted in Cooper v. Aaron

    Freedom Riders

    White and black civil rights activists whose goal was to bring attention to segregation in public transportation.
  • March on Washington

    The March took place in Washington DC.
    The purpose was to advocate for civil and economic rights of African Americans.
  • Freedom Summer

    Campaign to register as many African Americans to be able to vote in Mississippi.
    Caused by a 5.3% African American registered to vote.
  • 24th Amendment

    24th Amendment ended poll tax and other types of taxes to restrict voting.
    Ended the poor from not being able to vote.
  • Civil Rights act of 1964

    Labor law in the US made discrimination base on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
    Ended segregation in public places.
  • Voting rights act of 1965

    "Landmark piece of federal legislation"
    Prohibits racial discrimination in voting.
  • MLK Assassination

    Martin Luther King, a major activist in the American civil rights movement was assassinated.
    This gave the civil rights movement more power.
