  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Supreme Court ruled that segregation is unfair to African Americans. Linda Brown went to a school in Kansas and received heavy discrimination for being black and got kicked out of school. Her family then filed a law suit against the BOE.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white male and got incarcerated for refusing. This sparked the Montgomery bus boycott which ended segregation on public transportation.
  • Little Rock 9

    Group of students who were the first black students to attend a white school in Arkansas. They got the title "Little Rock 9" for being the first black students to go to Little Rock High School.
  • Sit-ins

    The sit-in movements were forms of nonviolent protest that directly took action against discrimination and prejudice
  • United Farmers Union

    Created by Caesar Chavez, grew to be the largest farmers union in the country.
  • Publication of "The Feminine Mystique"

    This book by Betty Friedan ignited the fire of the second-wave feminism by explaining the pressures that women have.
  • March on Washington

    MLK Jr. gave his "I have a dream speech" during this march. This march was one of the strongest marches in American history.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Supreme court got rid of any discrimination based on race, sex, color, religion, or national origin.
  • Second-wave feminism

    Feminist movement that led to the advocation for issues like equality in the workplace
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Act that got rid of any voting discrimination. Didn't matter what race, color, sex, religion you were, you could vote if you were of age.
  • Creation of Black Panther party

    Founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale to promote the ideology of black nationalism, socialism, armed self-defense, mostly against police brutality.
  • American Indian Movement (AIM)

    Founded to address issues like racism and discrimination against Native Americans
  • Occupation of Alcatraz Island (AIM)

    Protest against the United States government's policies that took aboriginal land away from American Indians and aimed to destroy their cultures.
  • Roe v Wade

    Decision by Supreme Court that ruled that a state law that banned abortion was unconstitutional.
  • Wounded Knee Organization

    Native American activists occupied Wounded Knee, South Dakota, to protest how the government was treating these people.
