Brown vs. Board of Education
Brown vs. Board of Education was a court case launched by local members of the NAACP when their kids were refused admission to the local schools. Claiming that the school system has violated the 14th amendment, they filed a suit against the Topeka Board of Education. In the end, the U.S supreme court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, so they overruled Plessy V. Ferguson and "separate but equal” and they also commanded all public schools to integrate. -
Montgomery Bus boycott
The Montgomery Bus boycott starts off with Rosa Parks being arrested. On the evening of December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was taking the bus making her way home from work. While on her ride, a White forced her to get out her seat but she refused, she was quickly arrested after that.This outraged African Americans and so they started to boycott the bus system which caused it to fail. In the end the boycott was successful, and the Supremecourt ruled that segregating publictransportwas unconstitutional. -
State flag controversy
The stateflag controversy started with the creation of the 1956 state flag,but some Georgians thought that it was not appropriate to make the flag with a confederate battle symbol which caused a dividing conflict in GA.The flag also caused Georgia to lose business and tourism opportunities.Then in 2001 the Barnes flag was created but people that liked the 1956 flag protested and did not want Barnes.The conflict was finally resolved when Perdue became governor and let the people vote for theflag. -
The Sibley Commission
The Sibley Commission started off with the problem that Governor Ernest Vandiver was forced with the choice of closing or integrating schools, so he formed the Sibley commission hoping to see the public's opinion.The commission would get the data by seeing if people would rather follow federal mandates and integrate schools or follow GA law and close the schools.They held 10hearings across GA to get the data and they found that 60% of Georgians would rather close the schools than integrate them. -
Albany movement
The Albany Movement was a desegregation campaign with a goal of to eliminate segregation in all aspects of local life. It was on November 17, 1961 and it lead by Dr. Martin Luther King, jr. the SNCC, the SCLC, and the NAACP. The March was considered a failure because no immediate changes were made and over 500 people were arrested including Martin Luther King Jr, even though this was a failure, the organizers learned from their mistakes and applied this to future protests. -
Assassination of JFK
The Assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy was a tragedy that left the United States in shock. The tragedy starts off with President Kennedy as he rode in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas in an open top convertible. Kennedy was waving to the crowd when Lee Harvey Oswald shot 3 times at President Kennedy fatally wounding him. Kennedy was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:00 P.M. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
President Kennedy originally proposed the Civil Rights Act, but he was assassinated before he could sign it, so it was signed into law by President Johnson. The Civil Rights Act prohibited segregation in all public places, prohibited discrimination in hiring, firing and promotion, and it allowed the federal Gov't the right to withhold funds from states that resisted. The Civil Rights Act caused a split in the Democratic party but it also led the way for the Voting Rights Act of 1965. -
Selma to Montgomery March
The Selma to Montgomery March was a series of 3 marches led by Dr. Martin Luther King who led thousands of protesters to the capitol in Montgomery, Alabama. It took 5 days to reach the 54-mile journey and the goal of the marches was to draw attention to the Voting Rights Act to protect the Voting Rights of African Americans. In the end, the outcome of the marches was that President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
