Election of 1946 and the 3 Governor Controversy
Eugene Talmadge won the election of 1946. He didnt win the popular but at the time Georgia's elections were based on county unit system. Talmadge won the most county unit votes. During the elcetion process Talmadge traveled and delivered 227 speeches. All the traveling and speeches was too much for his health and Talmadge passed away before he took office. Brown vs Board of education
Brown vs the board of education was a supreme court case which was some schools were allowing black students to join. The state-sanctioned segregation of public schools was a violation of the 14th amendment and there for was unconstitutional. Many people were unhappy with this court case and didnt want black students to go to "white schools." -
State Flag Replaced
The state flag was replaced because many georgians were saying that the confedernte battle flag was not a proper symbol for the state flag. In 1969 the state representative Janet Merrit introduced the 1st bill to return to the pre-1956 flag. -
Formation of SNCC
Students formed the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) This was created in Atlanta due to the lunchcounter sit in so that they could better organize their activites and to help possibly stop segregation. -
March on Albany
Many black people marched in Albany Ga to organize protests against segregation. The plan was to boycott business that depened on black customers to survive until they hired black workers. African Americans marched in the streets and were arrested. They protested the arrests and when they were not protesting they were in churches organizing and planning. -
Admission of Charlayane Hunter and Hamilton Holmes to UGA
The admission of Charlayane and Hamiltion to UGA was a very important moment because it was the 1st time that black students were accepted "white school." When they arrived at the school there was a mob of unhappy people. The event marked the culmination of a legal battle that had begun a decade earlier when Horace Ward unsuccessfully sought admission to law school. -

The march on Washington was a march in which over 200000 americans marched on Washington for jobs and freedom. During tge march Martin Lunther King Jr, gave his famous "I have a Dream" speech. Civil rights act of 1964
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segragation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, or national orgin. This was considered one of the most "crowning" Legislative achievements of the civil rights movement. -

The Voting Rights act of 1965 was a law that was signed by president Lyndon Johnson that allowed african americans to vote. This was a big part of the civil rights legislation. -

Election of Maynard Jackson as mayor of Atlanta
He was atlantas first black mayor, the first of a major southern city, He served three terms. As mayor he hired more black police officers, ensured that minority contractors got more city buisness and completed the new terminal at Hartsfield International Airport ahead of schedule and under budget. The airport was renamed Hartsfield-Jackson in his honor in 2003 -
