President Truman signed an order stating ¨It is hereby declared to be the policy of the president that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin. -
Brown V Board of Education
The Supreme Court ruled segregation in public schools is unconstitutional. The ruling paved the way for large scale desegregation. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a bus. She was arrested shortly after the black community launched a bus boycott and it lasted for about a year until the buses were desegregated. -
Little Rock
A former all white high school denied 9 black students from entering the building from the governor Orval Faubus. President Eisenhower sent federal troops from the national guard to intervene making it known as Little Rock Nine. -
Freedom Riders
Over the spring and summer volunteers traveled to the south to test out new laws that prohibited segregation of any public transportation.Several groups of the ¨Freedom Riders¨ were mobbed by angry riots. The Groups included 1,000 members both black and white. -
James Meredith
Became the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi -
Letter From Birmingham Jail
Martin Luther King Jr was jailed for his anti segregation protest in Birmingham Alabama. He wrote a book called ¨Letter From Birmingham Jail¨ about how citizens have moral duty to disobey unjust laws. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Made black voters able to vote easier. All literary tests, poll tax, and other requirements made illegal. -
Martin Luther King Assassinated
Martin Luther King Jr at age 39 was assassinated by James Earl Ray on his balcony outside of his hotel. -
Civil Rights Restoration Act
Congress passes the Civil Rights Restoration Act which reached non discrimination laws within private institutions. -
