  • Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) founded

    -Civil rights- a persons freedom and equality - the CORE helped
  • Brown v. Board of Education Ruling

    -Thurgood Marshall he became the leader of the NAACP in 1940
    Brown wanted all people of different races to go to the same schools
    - the court wanted people of different races to go to different schools
  • Executive Order 9981

    -segregation separating one group from another based on appearance or personality
    - truman ended segeration in the military
    - blacks were able to fight for their country
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott start

    boycott a protest againstance something that you don't agree with
    rosa parks she was a 43 year old african american who refused to give up her seat on the bus
    since she was arrested MLK 26 leaded a protest
    the boycott lasted 361 days
  • Integration of Central High School

    Little Rock Nine african americans who went to school in an all white school
    each of the nine students had there own swat team member
    2,000 white students had been attending the central HS at the time.
  • First lunch counter sit in

    Jim crow law's law that stated that the south needed to be segregated
    -the four african americans were sittin there and were not derved
    - 20 others joined the sit in
  • Freedom Rides

    Freedom Rides
    -Civil disobedience: a peaceful protest against something protesters disagree with
    - Congress of Racial Equality was involved with organizing these freedom rides
    -CORE ended abandoning freedom rides, but SNCC continued them
    - Some freedom riders were beat up for their cause
  • March on Washington

    NAACP group that fights against attacks apon african americans
    more than 250,000 people were in the mach there were 60,000 white people in the march -
  • Birmingham campaign

    - on April 2nd 1963 MLK and 50 others were arrested for protesting.
    -Birmingham was the most segregated city
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    - African Americans got the right to Vote Because of this Act

    Nation of Islam a group of black muslims that were believed in separation between blacks and whites
    Malcom X a supporter pf blacks rights
    malcom went into crime as a young kid
    he believed in the worlds of a muslim named elijah
  • Black Panther Party Founded

    Black Power a movement who's goal was to support the rights of african americans
    they chose their name because of black panthers where the most popular animal
    the group was created to stand up for african americans against white
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    discrimination not letting someone else do something another person is doing
    days after MLK was assassination the government made the civil rights act
    the civil rights act was mainly for african americans to get houses
  • Watts Riot

    Kerner Commission- a group of whites that said that african americans were the cause of the watts riot
    ghettos- a part of the town that has everyone of the same race living in it
    the riot lasted 6 days
    34 died 900 were injured 4,000 were arrested
  • Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenberg Board of Education

    desegregation the ending of segregation a group of people
    the juge made a ceritan decision that people did not like so they begged him to change it
    there were all blacks schools and all white schools
  • Regents of the Univeristy of California v. Bakke

    Affirmative action a rule that supported people who were discriminated against
    during the trial, the court was completely split
    California won the trial
