  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford
    Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri, a free state. He filed suit in Missouri court for freedom after the compromise of 1820. He ended up losing the trial so he tried again, bringing a new suit to the federal courts. His master said that no descendent of a slave could be a free man. Scott lost this case too with a 7-2 decision for Sanford.
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    The 14th amendment granted every person, former slave or not, citizenship if they were born in the United States. It guarenteend all citizens equal protection of the laws.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    The 15th Amendment protected everyones right to vote and should not be denied based on race, color, gender, etc.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    This supreme court decision upheld the constitutionality of public racially segregated facilities. A doctrine came out called "segregated but equal."
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    The nineteenth amendment give women the right to vote, and says no citizens can be denied voting rights based on gender.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    This supreme court case decision deemed it unconstitutional to racially segregate in schools, even if both sides are treated equally.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    This event help end discrimination against race and gender in employment. This is protecting against the hiring, firing and segregation of employees based on color and sex.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    This event was against racial discrimination during voting. Even after the 15th amendment, African American people were being denied the right to vote in southern states.

    Reed v. Reed

    Title IX
    Title IX is a civil rights law part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in and education system federally funded.
  • Regents of the university of California v. Bakke

    Regents of the university of California v. Bakke
    This supreme court case ruled that it was unconstitutional to use racial quotas in the admissions process. They were denying unworthy students just based on if there were minority competition.

    The ADA helps prevent discrimination of Americans with disabilities.
  • Obergefell v. Hodges

    Obergefell v. Hodges
    This court case ruling allowed same sex's to get married under the fourteenth amendment.
