  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education
    There was a thing where black people would be separated for everything. When they were given the opportunity to vote. Whites would make it impossible to vote. When they did get through all off the Jim Crow laws. People would just throw the votes in the trash. There was a court case later on where people allowed blacks to be in schools with whites. People went crazy because of it and tried to harm the black students. The government brought guards to protect the children.
  • Murder of Emmet Till

    Murder of Emmet Till
    There was a brutal murder of a 14 year old boy called Emmet. He whistled at a women and the husband of the woman; Roy and his half brother J. W. Milam went to go find Till. They kidnapped Till. When Till was kidnapped he was beaten and tortured. Roy and his brother then threw Till’s body in the river with a barbed wire around his neck, and tied with a 75 pound cotton fan. When they found his body three days later Till’s mom wanted a open casket for her son. To show everyone the truth.
  • Rosa Parks/bus boycott

    Rosa Parks/bus boycott
    There was this women called Rosa Parks. She was known for not moving when a white person told her to move on bus. That caused a lot black people to boycott the bus system. They ended up walking all the way to a bridge. Martin Luther King Jr was the person who was the head of the boycott. He was so surprised that a lot of black people have shown up. There boycott succeeded, and now Rosa is known for this situation.

    Southern Christian Leadership Conference SCLC
    A meeting of Black church pastors to coordinate events for black people. MLK was elected the 1st president. This group used a nonviolent strategy. This group also registered blacks to vote, opposed Vietnam war and provided better jobs for blacks
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    9 student wanted to go to Little Rock High School. They were told by therapists and other people what they will expect. The governor of Arkansas callout the National Guard to Stop them. President Eisenhower calls in 1,200 military men to escort these students from home to class. Even in the protection of the military personnel. The 9 kids would still deal with physical, and emotional abuse from the other students. In 1959 all schools integrated to allowing all students in there schools.
  • Greensboro Sit ins

    Greensboro Sit ins
    There was these four college students. They were tired of the segregation when it came to counters in public stores. They decided that they would go to this store called Woolworth in Greensboro, North Carolina. They would buy stuff in that store then sit at the sit in counter that was only for whites. That then caused a lot of blacks to protest to stop the segregation again. It was to the point that there was about 1,000 students protesting about this.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    436 individuals in 60 separate freedom riders. They were a bunch of mostly college students from 39 states. It started in Washington DC. They had to go to the Deep South to desegregate bus stations, diners and hotels. They got to Anniston, Alabama got blocked by the KKK. The buses that they were in would get their tires slashed, fire bombed, burned, and beaten.

    In August 28,1963, 250,000 people marched in Washington D.C. It was a peaceful and respectful protest. It was for jobs and freedom for African Americans. Martin Luther King gave his “I have a dream” speech. Martin Luther King was the last person to speak. People still stayed just to listen to Martin’s speech.

    The government allowed an act. That was to prevent racial discrimination. In was about everything. It was based on race, color, religion, or national origin. If you are in a private place or in a public place. You should be able to be there and not get told to leave. For something that makes us, us.
  • Malcom X

    Malcom X
    Civil Rights leader who was part of the Nation Of Islam. He changed his original name to Malcom X because he didn’t want to be called by a slave owner name. He wanted black people to believe in themselves. They started to make their own businesses. He was shot 21 times. Thomas Hagan convicted of the killing.
  • Selma

    Selma
    Black marchers wanted to walk 54 miles. It was to Montgomery, so they would be able to vote. The governor told a bunch of troopers to wait for the marchers. At the Edmond Bridge; troopers would beat them up. The incident would be shown on national television. Everyone was moved, and had a change of heart when watching the horrific incident.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    It allowed African Americans to vote. If any discrimination were to happen it would be charged. It was not just African Americans though. It also allowed Asians and other people to vote as well. If people were disabled there would be people to help them. If they were illiterate people would help them as well.
  • Martin Luther King Jr

    Martin Luther King Jr
    King was protesting in Memphis. King did a strike for better pay and fair treatment. That was for the workers. When he was protesting in a hotel. He was shot on the lower part of his face. He was shot by a Remington Rifle by James Earl Ray. He was soon sentenced to 99 years. Kings death would be the end of the civil rights movement.
