  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This court case changed the governments mind on segregation in public schools and decided it was unconstitutional. Even though they said state sponsored segregation was constitutional after the Plessy v. Ferguson Case.

    Montgomery Bus Boycott

    This movement was started after an African American Women named Rosa Parks did not give up her bus seat to a white man and was arrested. This movement ended after the supreme court ruled it was unconstitutional and the African Americans returned to riding the buses.

    Nine negro students enrolled into a white school but were prevented, this lead to the little rock crisis and the government got involved.

    Sit in Movement

    The sit in Movement was a group of non violent protesters that would have groups of people sit at segregated places to try to get a positive outcome. In many towns, the sit-ins were successful in achieving the desegregation of lunch counters and other public places, and over 70,000 people took part in the sit ins.

    This was a civil rights movement for Latinos. The main goal was to achieve Mexican American empowerment.

    The Freedom riders were civil activist who rode buses into segregated parts of towns. They tried to change to peoples opinion on segregation

    Birmingham Violence

    This was a movement to bring attention to integration efforts of African Americans. Some protesters were struck with a water jet from a fire truck.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    This act ended discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This act ended all unequal segregation in the work force, voting registration and schools.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    This act prohibits discrimination in voting. This act made literacy test illegal and gave African Americans equal voting rights.

    Watt's Riot

    This riot was started after a African American Motorist was pulled over for suspicion of drunk driving and a fight broke out. The community then reacted by 6 days of looting and arson, this resulted in 34 deaths.

    This is the first act in history that was for the needs of Limited English speaking students in the U.S.

    This is a big case in United States History. The case was decided by using another case in history Doe v. Bolton.
