    Tuskegee Institute Created
    First historically black college in the US. Created by Booker T. Washington.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    Court case that ruled to have segregated facilities only if they were equal. First step in the civil rights movement.
  • NAACP Created

    NAACP Created
    Short for National Association for Advancement of Colored People.
    It targeted to end racial discrimination.
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    Women's right to vote. This was the first time women were allowed to have a say in the Federal Government.
  • Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) proposed

    Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) proposed
    Gave equal rights to all American citizens. It significant because it was the first time that all people were able to equally express themselves.

    Abolished descrimination about race, color, or national origin.

    Nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock high school, but were rejected due to segregation laws. This was the first start in integration, but the Arkansas governor did not allow it so the national guard had to escort them around the school.

    Mexican Americans began using sides of buildings like schools, churches, libraries, and other public facilities to express their unrecognized culture.

    A non violent protest in Greensboro, NC in the Woolworth store. formed the SECJ, which led to the formation of SNCC. This was one of the first visual efforts to give rights to students.

    Freedom riders were people who rode busses down the street to protest segregation in public transportation. This is important because it was one of the first steps to desegregating public transportation.

    Civil rights activist who alongside Delores Huerta, founded the United Farm Workers Association. This began to give farm workers more civil liberties.

    MLK Jr’s letter defending his strategy to end inequality of African Americans, after being arrested for showing his beliefs.

    A speech given by MLK jr for jobs and freedom in the African American community. He asked for civil and economic rights, and an end to racism in the US.
