Freedom Riders travel through South
Two buses full of the first freedom riders travel through the South tø test the banning of segregated buses. The Freedom Riders consisted of 6 whites and 7 blacks. These rides led to bus bombings and arrests. -
James Merideth enrolls in University of Mississippi
James Merideth enrolls at the all white University of Mississippi. Gov. Barnett was refusing to let him enter the school so Kenndy orders marshals to escort James inside the school. Leads to campus riot. -
University of Mississippi Campus Riot
Campus riot caused by Kenndy having James Merideth escorted into school. Gov. Barnett was outraged and called for demostraters, leading up to the riot. Two people died and 5000 soldiers made 200 arrests. -
Martin Luther King and small group start marching
Martin Luther King and a small group of people start marching to desegregate the city of Birmingham. MLK and his marchers are arrested by Bull Connor the police commissioner. -
2nd March- MLK and 1000 marchers.
There were 959 arrests made from the 1001 marchers. Bull Connor the police commissioner called and reservered jail cells across the state for all the arrests he knew he was going to make. -
3rd march lead by MLK
This time, the police came in riot gear and used tear gas, clubs, fire hoses, and dogs to stop the march and beat the supporters. All of the riot was being broadcasted live on T.V. This leads to Birmingham officals meeting MLK's demands. -
MLK annouces march from Selma to Montgomery
During this march 600 protesters were beaten and tear gased. March 20th- 3000 marchers start- 25000 finish in montgomery. This march leads to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 -
Stokely Carmichael arrested; Black Power slogan is born
Stokely Carmichael was arrested for setting up tent at all black highschool. That night protesters held a rally and Stokely shows up beaten by police then gives speech using slogan, "Black Power" -
MLK is assassinated
Martin Luther King's assissination lead to the worst urban riots in U.S. history to this day. 125 cities were rioted across America.
