    Brown v Board of Education
    The Brown v. Board of Education case was the case that overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson ruling that seperate but equal public facilities were allowed. The case ruling was that it was unconstitutional for schools to be segregated and that all schools must desegregate. The Sibley Commission was used to gather up information regarding whether or not the citizens of Georgia wanted to desegregate schools, however, the governor of Georgia followed federal orders and eventually desegregated schools.

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa Parks Video The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a demonstration where activists refused to ride buses, in order to bring attention to the fact that segregation on buses and any other public place was not right. Rosa Parks, a civil rights leader was the one ultimately started the movement. It lasted from December 5, 1955 to December 20, 1956.

    Formation of SCLC and the goals – leaders.
    The Southern Leadership Conference was an activist group that fought for the rights of African Americans. Martin Luther King Jr. worked with the SCLC on many ocasions, including a sit-in at a store in downtown Atlanta, where many demostraters were jailed. One of the main demostrations that the SCLC organized was the Albany Movement, which was a good learning experience for the rest of their movements.

    Th Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee gave young Afican Americans a chance to be apart of the civil rights movement. SNCC organized many non-violent protests, such as sit-ins. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference worked with SNCC along with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for some protests. SNCC organized the sit-in at the Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro. At first unsuccessful, SNCC eventually led the the desegregation of the lunch counter on July 25, 1960

  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    The Albany Movement was a campaign in the city of Albany, organized by major civil rights activist groups, SNCC and SCLC. The movement was put in place in efforts to integrate all public areas in the city. The Albany Movement was the first movement at the time to try and integrate the whole community. Although the campaign was deemed a failure, because the movement failed to desegregate the city, many people viewed it as a good learning experience for future movements.

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. The law gave African Americans the rights that they were fighting for. The law stated that discrimination and segregation was illegal in schools, employment, and public places. This law was important, because it gave blacks the freedoms that they wanted, and helped to desegregate communities all over the United States.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    The Voting Rights Act of 1965 took away all disenfranchisement towards African Americans who voted. This was important, because it made it illegal to stop African Americans from voting, which meant that candidates had to work to get the votes of blacks. President Lyndon Johnson signed it into bill on August 6th.
