    Brown V Board of Education
    A 3rd grader, Linda Brown had to walk a mile to her school meanwhile she lived only blocks away from an all white school. In her neighborhood there were 18 all white schools and only 4 schools for blacks. Burnett eventually served a lawsuit and many parents had come along with. Together they beat the system and it led to the ruling that segregated schools were unconstitutional. In 1961, Atlanta beame the first school system to intergrate. Now , I can sit in very diversed classes.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    A couple of days before the boyott started , a black women named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white man on a Montgomery Bus. After being arrested and fined on the day of her court hearing the Montgomery Bus Boycott began. It lasted for over a year leading to the intergartion of Montgomery bus sytems. She played as a key role and a great reason why transportation now is desegregated.

    SCLC
    The Southeren Christian Leadership Confrence was created when 60 black ministers met in Atlanta. Their goal was to repeat the successful strategy and tactics of the Montogomery Bus Boycott. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, was chosen as the president of the group.

    SNCC
    The Student Nonviolent Coordinationg Comitee was an important organization during the Civil Rights Movement. They had student meetings put together by Ella Baker. The meetings were held at Shaw University.
  • Charylayne Hunter & Hamilton Holmes

    Charylayne Hunter & Hamilton Holmes
    Charylayne and Hamilton were the first African Americans to be admitted to the University of Georgia. UGA did not admit african americans however , they continues to resubmit their applications time ater time after being denied. After 2 years of trying they were accepted and enrolled. They arrived on campus on Janurary 9th where they were teased taunted and harrased. Eventually they finished despite the difficulties. Now, Hamilton is an orthopedic physician and Charylayne is a journalist.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    The Freedom Riders were Civil Rights activst who rode interstate buses into segregated areas. Led by James Farmer. They challenged the U.S Supreme Court decision with 2 cases. Ended up ruling segregated public buses were unconstitutional.
  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    The Albany Movement was a coalition for desegregation by local activists including the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Comitee and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It resulted in jailing of more than 1,00 african americans. Martin Luther King soon aborted the mission because he felt like he failed at the results.
  • March On Washington

    March On Washington
    200,000 African Americans gathered in Washington DC. Chaired by Phillip Randolph and organized by Bayard Rustin it turned out to be a huge success. They recieved many speeches including " I Have a Dream " by Martin Luther King and others with the views of the future for blacks. Organized to put light on the political and social life of African Americans.

    Civil Rights Act was a huge peice of civil rights legeslation in the United states. It outlawed discrimination based off of race, color, religion and gender. Ended all segregation in public places including bathrooms, resturants ,and theathres. This is considered one of the crowning legeslative acheivements of the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Voting Rights Act Of 1965

    Voting Rights Act Of 1965
    The Voting Rights Act was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson. The goal was to overcome legel barriers at the local and state levels that stopped African Americans from exercising their right to vote using the 15th Amendment. The 15th Amendment granted African American men the right to vote.
  • Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

    Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
    Dr. King was shot and killed by a man named , James Earl Ray. Ray had been plotting the murder of Dr. King since early 1968. While King was in Memphis , Tennesse James shot and killed him. James went and rented a room in a house that was near the motel where Dr. King stayed. He stood in a shared bathroom with his riffle and shot King as he stood on his balcolny. After shooting King he fled the seen and was never found until July 19th by the FBI.
