Brown vs Board of education
It’s a Supreme Court case that ends segregation. The vote was 9-0 or unanimous. Linda brown who had a two commute to go to black school, where a white school was blocks away. It’s a great decision, however there was a lot of violence after the ruling. -
Emmet Till
A 14 year old boy from Chicago, visiting family in Mississippi. He was accused of whistling at a white woman. Roy Bryant and JW Milan kidnap, beat,shot, killed, and then threw emmets body in the river. Emmets mother had an open casket funeral. Both men stood trial, and found not guilty. This was the spark that started the civil rights movement. -
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks of Montgomery Alabama had sat in the back of the bus when a white person walked in and told her to move. She refused to move because she had just gotten off work and was very tired so she was then arrested. On dec 5 a boycott of busses lasted 381 days. It was non violent protest to start more civil rights movements. -
Bus Boycott
Bus boycott begins and lasts 381 days. Martin Luther King emerges as the leader of the bus boycott. 1st large scale demonstration-nonviolent in the u.s. very successful because 75% of all riders are black. -
SCLC
This started after the bus boycott to organize protest. Martin Luther King was elected President. Organized protest around the south to coordinate events such Greensboro sit ins, march on Washington and Selma. After MLKS assasination it declined. This still exists today. -
Little Rock 9
Testing brown v board of education descisions. 9 students were vetted to undergo this test. Airborne escorted students to class. Following year all public schools closed 1958. Aug 29, 1959 schools reopened. -
Greensboro 4
4 College students sat down at a Lunch Counter at woodworths to be served. They were refused service. Continued to “sit-in” and others joined, the protest spread to other towns, which forced spread. -
Student nonviolent coordinating committee and freedom summer
Youth groups of students remained fiercely independent of MLK and SCLC, generating their own projects and strategies. The two organizations worked side by side through the early years of thr civil rights movements. Is group was the second half of the freedom riders and were a part of the March to Selma. -
Freedom Riders
2 week bus trip to the Deep South, to deliberately violate Jim Crow laws. It was organized by Core The busses were burned and riders beaten by the KKK. Nov 1, 1961 white and colored signs are removed from bus stations, train stations, and lunch counters. -
March on Washington
For jobs and freedom was to advocate for the civil and economic rights of African Americans. 250,000 people were in attendance at the Lincoln memorial. MLK was the last to speak, and gave his” “ I have a dream speech”. 70-80% of Marchers were black. It helped to pass thr Civil-Rights Act of 1964. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Forbids employers and labor unions to discriminate against any person on grounds of race, color, religion, sex,physical disability or age in job related matters. Prohibits discrimination against race, color, religion, national origin, sex , or physical disabilities. Can not be refused service. -
March on Selma
It’s known as Bloody Sunday. 600 students March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama to get the rights to vote. They walked 45 miles and were stopped at the bridge, seen on national television. LBJ order the passage of 1965 voting right law. 2md March took place on March 21, 24 days with 25,000 including MLK. -
Voting rights act of 1965
One of the most comprehensive pieces of legislation in US history. Blacks were registered to vote and being elected to public office.
