1957
Jan.–Feb- MLK establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and then became president of the group
September 2nd- Nine black students are blocked from entering the school on the orders of Governor, also known as The Little Rock Nine -
1958
September 4 – Justice Department sues under Civil Rights Act to force Terrell County, Georgia to register blacks to vote
September 12 – In Cooper v. Aaron the U.S. Supreme Court rules that the court choose what schools shut down -
1960
March 4, 1960 – Houston's first sit-in, led by Texas Southern University students and at a super market
March 19 – San Antonio becomes first city to integrate lunch counters. -
1961
May 4- group called Freedom Riders goal is to integrate buses
May 14- their(freedom riders) bus is attack and burned then a mob caught them and the freedom riders went to jail -
1962
September 20 – James Meredith is no able to become the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi.
November 20 – President Kennedy held 1960 presidential campaign promise to get rid of housing segregation by signing Executive Order 11063 banning segregation in Federally funded housing. -
1963
April 7 – Ministers John Thomas Porter, Nelson H. Smith and A. D. MLK march with 2,000 marchers to protest the jailing of movement leaders in Birmingham.
April 12 – MLK got arrested in Birmingham for "parading without a permit". -
1964
January 23 – Twenty-fourth Amendment abolishes the poll tax for Federal elections.
June 9 – peaceful marchers beaten, arrested and tear gassed by Tuscaloosa, Alabama police this is also called "Bloody Tuesday" -
1965
February 18 – After a good protest march in Marion, Alabama, state troopers break it up and one shoots Jimmie Lee Jackson. He died on February 26
February 21 – Malcolm X is assassinated in Manhattan, New York -
1966
January 10- Vernon Dahmer gets wounded by a bomb in Hattiesburg Mississippi
The Chicago Housing Movement is let by MLK and James Bevel -
1968
February 8 – The Orangeburg Massacre occurs during university protest in South Carolina.
April 4 – MLK is shot and killed in Memphis, Tennesse
