They were the first African Americans to get into UGA. They were first denied even though they had the qualifications to get in. Then they were accepted and both graduated with success. After they were first denied they took their case to the federalcourt where they won. -
Sibley Commission
The Sibley Commission was created by Ernest Vanderer after Brown vs. Board vs Board of Education. It was designed togather the opinions of Georgian citizens about the intregation of schools. He didthis because he did not want to make a decision without the support of the citizens. John Sibley wasin charge of gathering the votes andnthe result wqas 60% of Georgian's would rather shut down the schools than integrate. -
Brown Vs. Board of Education
Brown v. Board of Education was a United States Supreme Court case which the Court declared state laws stating separate public schools for black and white students was not constitutional. -
Herman Talmadge
Herman Talmage was the governor of Georgia from 1948-1955 and a white supremasist. He was in the senate protecting rural Georgia. He was defeated for reelction in 1980 because of all the African Americans did not vote for him because of his dicrimination against them and finding jobs. -
Albany Movement
The Aubany Movement was a successful failure that planned to get everyone in the movement (SNCC) arrested, and after that happened they had no one left to protest their cause. This failure became a success because even though it did not work how they planned, they understood if they would have plannedit out differently then they would have been a success. So they madecorrections forthe next time. -
SNCC
SNCC (Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee) wasone of the major civil rights organizations ofthe 1960's. They were a non violent group of highschool and college kids who werefamous for their freedom rifes and sit ins to make a change. This group started the Aubany Movement which ended upbeing a failure, but in Atlanta they organized successful sit ins. -
March on Washington
The March on Washington was the largest gathering for civil rights ever. It was led by Martin Luther King jr. when he read his "i have a dream" speech. This event led for jobs and freedom and demanded civil rights and economic rights for African Americans. This even was a nonviolent protest which led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 -
Civil Rights Act
movements of all time. It started when world war 2 ended and the New Deal had been released. The purpose of the Civil Rights Act was to forbey dicrimination on the basis of race/sex in hiring, promoting, firing. After the act, the EEOC (Equal Employment Oppertunity Committee) was formed. -
Lester Maddox
Lester Madox was an American politician who served for the 75th Governor of the U.S. state of Georgia from 1967 to 1971.he was a populist Democrat. He was a white supremasist and he refused to serve black customers in his restaurant against the Civil Rights Act. -
Martin Luther King jr.
Martin Luther King jr. was a non-violent protestor/activist who encouraged African Americans fight fortheir jobs and freedom.He demanded civil and economic freedom and wanted aq change for African Americans living in the United States. Throughout his lifer he gave many influencial speeches and spoke about his dream and hopes of the country joining together as a union rather than being segregated. -
Andrew Young
Andrew Jackson Young, Jr. is a politician, activist, and pastor from Georgia. Part of his work was nonviolent organizing strategies to people who members of the organization chose as future leaders. He won Georgia's Fifth District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972 and became the first African American since Reconstruction to be elected to Congress from Georgia. -
Maynard Jackson
Maynard Jackson wasa politician who was the first African American to serve as mayor of a major southern city. He served for 8 consecutive years and then 3 terms. He was a democrat. -
Benjamin Mays
Benjamin Mays was an American Baptistt minister and activist who was a leader in the CivilRights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights, and the progression of political rights of African Americans in America.
