Executive Order
Harry Truman signed an executive order so segregation was over through any type of armed services(military). This was significant because now everyone was working together and their race didn't get in the way. Also now any black people could be in the military. -
Brown VS. Board of Education
This was a major event because it ended segregation in all schools. It was significant event because it allowed all blacks and whites to get an equal education from schools. -
Murder of Emmett Til
Emmett Till was caught whistling at a white women and was later lynched and set on fire. This was very significant because after this everyone noticed that something needed to change for blacks. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
The Bus Boycott was a social and political protest against the racial segregation on the public transportation system of Montgomery, Alabama. It was a seminal event in the Civil Rights Movement. This was important because their protest caused the transportation company to shut down due to little money income. -
Civil Rights Act or 1957
President Dwight D. signed a law to the Civil Rights Act. This helped reconstruct segregation throughout segregated area. This was significant because it was a major step forward in this segregated time. -
Little Rock Crisis
During this key event a group of African Americans got enrolled in all white school. All of the whites could not even enter the school because there were blacks there, until some whites actually went into the school. This was significant because it ended segregation for that school and that town. -
Sit-In Campaign
This protest gave a right to blacks so they can eat in diners where whites were also eating at. Blacks would walk into diners and were refused to be served by waitresses, but they would still wait for service. This was significant because blacks and whites were able to eat at the same diner together. -
The Freedom Ride
The freedom riders(black and whites) would go around to different segregated areas and tried to get blacks the right to vote. This was significant because blacks got a little more equality after the freedom riders went though. -
Albany Movement
This movement challenged all forms of racial segregation. They failed to accomplish their goals. This was significant because it was credited as a key lesson to the Civil Rights Movement. -
Mississippi Riot
The Mississippi White Society argued against James H. Meredith because he got a federal court to approve his all white and black education. This was significant because it paved equality throughout America. -
March on Washington
The March on Washington was a huge March to bring Blacks and Whites together, to listen to Martin Luther King's speech. There was an estimated 250,000 blacks and whites there. This was significant act because it brought many blacks and whites closer to ending segregation. -
Birmingham Demonstrations
Martin Luther King Jr would create different black groups and go around and protest at different whites' houses. Until eventually whites would come and protest with them. This was significant because it brought blacks and whites closer to ending segregation. -
Equal Pay Act
During this act much before blacks and whites, men and women all didn't have equal pay during that time. But then in 1963 congress passed a law where everyone gets equal pay(blacks, whites, men, and women). This was significant because blacks got to be a little more equal to whites once this law was passed. -
Selma
The Selma was a voter-campaign that Martian Luther King led through segregated areas. As they went to different areas they made progress some blacks actually were registered to vote there. This was significant because some blacks got what they wanted the right to vote. -
Fair Housing Act of 1968
This prevented house discrimination of race, sex and religion. This was significant because blacks had almost the same rights for housing as whites did.
