Equality in Armed Forces
President Truman signed an executive order stating that there equality in treatment to all races in the armed forces. This means all "colored" people get the same opportunities as white men in the armed forces. It also means the the armed forces can't discriminate against them in terms of not allowing them to have some job. -
Brown v. Board of Education
This court case decides that public schools cannot be segregated. It overturned the case "Plessy v. Ferguson." It paved way for desegregation. -
Emmitt Till
Black teen Emmitt Till was kidnapped, beaten, and shot. He was found in the river a few days later. This caused an outrage and strengthened the cause for the civil rights movement. -
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks, and black woman, refused to give up her seat for a white person. She was arrested and this started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. It is one of the most known events of the civil rights movement. -
Founding of the SCLC
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was founded and became a major force in fighting for rights. It taught the principles of civil disobedience and nonviolence. -
Little Rock Nine
These nine black students enroll in an otherwise white school. They were protected by U.S. National Guard soldiers, but constantly faced harassment. This was a huge turning point in education. -
Founding of SNCC
The founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. This was an organization to encourage students to act nonviolently to help the civil rights movement. -
James Meredith
He was the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi. Riots and violence began to get out of control. The violence causes President Kennedy to send federal troops. -
MLK Imprisoned
Martin Luther King Jr. is arrested and imprisoned. Here he rights his seminal "Letter from Birmingham Jail." This letter argues that individuals has a duty to disobey unjust laws. -

Birmingham Protests
Commissioner of Public Safety uses firehoses and dogs on black protesters. The images helped spread sympathy for the civil rights movement. -
March on Washington
Around 200,000 people join the march. This is where MLK gives his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. It was held at the Lincoln Memorial. -
24th Ammendment
Establishment of the 24th Ammendment. This ebolished the poll tax. The poll tax made black people pay to vote. -
Civil Rights act of 1964
Allows government enforcement of desegregation. Prohibits all kinds of discrimination. This includes race, religion, or national origin. -
Civil rights workers' bodies found
Three bodies, two white one black, were found. They had been arrested then released after dark. The Ku Klux Klan then got ahold of them. -
"Bloddy Sunday"
Protesters are stopped on the way to Mongomery by a police blockade. Fifty marchers are hopitalised because of tear gas, whips, and clubs were used against them. It was called "Bloody Sunday" by the media.
