Rosa Parks was sitting on the front row of a bus, when a white person came on the bus and she was told to give up her seat. She refused and was arrested. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
The black community held a citywide boycott of the buses in Montgomery, Alabama. It lasted over a year, but it should only have lasted a couple of days or weeks. -
Little Rock 9
9 black students were entering a white school, but they were blocked by the National guard because of the governor of Alabama's orders. -
Greensboro Four
Four black students from NC A & T college came in a restaurant and sat in the white section. They were refused to be served, but they wouldn't leave until they were. -
Freedom Riders
Civil Rights activists, Freedom Riders, rode on buses in the South, and many of them were arrested, others were met with great hostility. -

Martin Luther King Jr gave his speech at Lincoln's Memorial about freedom and equality for black people. -

16th Street Baptist Church Bombing
3 KKK members bombed a church, killing 4 black girls. The church was a popular location for civil rights meetings. -
24th Amendement
This amendment abolished poll taxes which kept African Americans from voting. -
Freedom Summer
A registration project in Mississippi to expand voting rights in the South for blacks. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
This act ended discrimination of all kinds, and provided the governments with the power to enforce desegregation. -
March From Selma to Montgomery-"Bloody Sunday"
In this march, 600 people began to walk 54 miles from Selma to Montgomery. 6 blocks in, state police, some even on horseback, started attacking the marchers. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
All laws that kept Southern blacks from voting were now against the law. -
