The Start of the Bus Boycott
Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat, starting the bus boycott that lasted for over a year. -
Supreme Court
Supreme court strikes down segregation on all buses. -
Little Rock Nine
Nine black students chose to integrate Central High School in Little Rock Arkansas. They were turned away by the national guard. The troops are withdrawn. President Eisenhower sends troops to protect the students. -
Greensboro Sit-ins
Four college age black students sat at a "whites only" counter at a Woolsworth in Greensboro, North Carolina. As days went on many more people joined them. They were beaten, had food thrown at them, and abused. -
Freedom Rides start
The first freedom ride left Washington D.C. with seven blacks and 6 whites. In the second week of thier ride thier bus was bombed and they were beaten. -
March on Washington
The largest demonstation involving around 250,000 people in the civil rights movement. During this demonstration, Matin luther king gave his famous speech, "I Have a Dream" speech. -
Freedom Summer
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), CORE and the NAACP and other civil-rights groups organize a massive African American voter registration drive in Mississippi known as "Freedom Summer." Three CORE civil rights workers are murdered. In the five years following Freedom Summer, black voter registration in Mississippi will rise from a mere 7 percent to 67 percent. -
Black Panther Party Founded
The Black Panther Party was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland California. The black panther party focused on using violence to protect yourself from police brutility. This party also started a lot of programs to combat poverty such as "Free Breakfast For Children". -
Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
MLK was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. He was 39 years old. His killer, James Earl Ray pleaded guilty and recieved 99 years in Tennessee State Penitentiary.MLK's death caused many riots. -
Civil rights Act of 1968
Johnson signs the civil right Act of 1968. This Act provided equal housing opprotunities regardless of race. The act was signed during the riots that started becuase of the King assassination.
