Plessy v. Ferguson
A 30- year old light skinned African American was jailed for sitting in a white car of a Louisiana railroad. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court arguing that the Seperate Car Act went against the Thirteenth and Fourteenth ammendments. The court voted that this act in fact was constitutional as long as they were "equal." -
Brown v. Board of Education
Resulting in the Little Rock nine, the board was making all schools to be segregated. African American teenagers and children all over were forced to walk ast white schools just to go to their bus stop to get to their school. The Board began to realize that this was wrong and it forced them into rethinking about joining schools from different races. -
Emmett Till is murdered.
Him and his cousin traveled to Mississippi to go see some family. Emmett was dared to say bye to a white woman as he left the store, he did as dared and two white men showed up at his house later that evening. They took Emmett from his home, beat him, then shot him in the head and then threw him in the river. When his mother had an open casket funeral it showed the North exactly how cruel the South is. Especially because in the case the found the men not guilty. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
40,000 African Americans refused to ride the city buses for 11 straight months. This event was started when Rosa Parks and many before her refused to move so a White man could take her seat. She was arrested for this and this sparked a huge movement for many Africans. The city finally passed a law saying that you cant segregate buses. -
Little Rock School Desegregation
The president Dwight D. Eisenhower placed nine African Americans in an all white school in Little Rock, Arkansas. Eisenhower had a national guard member walk each student throughout the day so they wouldnt get harmed. Only one of them got expelled because a white man called her a "niggger" and she poured spaghetti on him. The other eight student recieved their diplomas and were the first Aficans to graduate from that school. -
Sit-ins in Greensboro/Nashville
In Greensbor, North Carolina college law students were learning how to respond with no agression so they went to a diner, sat at the "whites" only counter and just sat there not ordering or anything. Weeks went by and the public started to react. While on the way to the diner the group was jumped and they stood to their word and didnt react at all. They continued going to the diner when they were done being being jumped and the police came and arrested them even though they were keeping quiet. -
March on Birmingham

March on Washington
250,000 African Americans attended the white house and was one of the largest Civil Rights demonstration. At the white house, Martin Luther King delivered his well known speech, "I have a dream." -
Civil Rights Act
This act made all forms of discrimination illegal. It was motivated by the March on Washington, which put pressure on the government to finally pass such legislation. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
This act demonstrated that you cannot descriminate during any voting practices held. by any fedeeral, state or local governent. -
Martin Luther King Assassinated
American Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was shot on his balcony in front of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. This event created a massive amount of riots throughout the year. A year later, the FBI figured out that James Earl Ray was the man who assassinated Martin Luther King Jr.
