Protesters used Sit-ins to fight for Civil rights
Through out the 1950's mant sit-ins were organized to try and gain the civil rights that everyone deserves. -
Brown v. Board of Education
the Supreme Court rules that segregation in schools is unconstitutional, concluding “In the field of public educational the doctrine ‘separate but equal’ has no place. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Rosa Parks inspired a boycott because she did not give up her seat on a bus to a white person. She was fined $ 10 but refused to pay them,so she was jailed.All blacks started boycotting which means that they did not ride any buses. -
The Little Rock 9
This was a social event becuase these children were not allowed to enter the school even though it was integrated ( allows every race). The 9 students would be attending the school and the whites were not happy about it and were waiting by the door to taunt and beat them up when they came to schol. -
Greensboro Coffee Party
African Americans were refused the right to order coffee at a lunch counter. So they would just sit in the Coffee places. -
Civil rights leaders protested in Birmingham,
Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested
The police used dogs and fire hoses on the marchers.
Birmingham’s white leaders decided to desegregate lunch counters, remove segregation signs and employ African Americans in downtown stores. -
March on Washington
Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream.”More people took part to build support for civil rights legislation -
Poll Tax removed
The 24th Amendment abolishes the poll tax, which originally had been instituted in 11 southern states after Reconstruction to make it difficult for poor blacks to vote. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Banned segregation in hotels, restaurants, schools and theaters.Also it created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to prevent job discrimination -

It banned literacy test and other laws that kept blacks form registering to vote -

Martin Luther King Jr. assination would be a social event becuase he was fighting to change rights of the African American people. -
Swann v. Mecklenburg
The Charlotte school system was ordered to integrate even if it meant busing students to different schools. -
Equal Rights Amendment
In the 1960s, women faced unequal treatment based on sex.Congress did pass laws guaranteeing equal job opportunities for women and men, as well as equal pay for equal work.
