  • Violence in Birmingham

    Violence in Birmingham
    The Birmingham movement was organised by the SCLC to bring attention to the integration efforts of African Americans into Birmingham, Alabama. After his arrest, a thousand students gathered to walk across Kelly Ingram Park, where they were met with fire hoses and police dogs.

    The Black Panthers were an organization of armed citizens that monitored the activities of the Oakland police and challenged police brutality. They also held social programs, such as the Free Breakfast for Black Children.

    A leader in the Civil Rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 by James Earl Ray at 6:01 PM. Before his assassination, he gave his "I've been on the Mountaintop" speech at a rally in Memphis, Tennessee.
