  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education
    In the case of Brown V. Board Of Education, the supreme court rules the segregation of public schools unconstitutional. The attorney on the winning case was Thurgood Marshall(who was also a participant in the NAACP) who eventually became the first black judge of the supreme court. Also in this case, the Plessy V. Ferguson case was overruled. Which that case said "seperate but equal".
  • Rosa Parks

    Rosa Parks
    Rosa Parks refuses to give her seat up on this day to a white man which causes controversy. She was arrested, and in response the affrican americans came up with a bus boycott (which MLK lead) which lasted more than a year, They did not ride the buses, they would walk, carpool and anything else they could do except riding the buses. They ended up desegregating the bus eventually.
  • Little Rock NIne

    Little Rock NIne
    Due to the decision of Brown V. Board Of Education, all schools were to be integrated. 9 students enrolled to a formally all white school (Cenral High School in Little Rock). On the first day, the govenor of Arkansas alerted the national guard to come and make sure the black students could not enter the school. Later that month, President Heinstower sent federal troops to escort the nine inside the school. They faced violence and many white protestors.
  • Greensboro Sit In

    Greensboro Sit In
    4 african american college students sit in at a "whites only" section at the Woolworth's lunch counter. They were refused service but they were allowed to stay there. After this, a lot of african americans began sitting in at "whites only" places as a way to protest in a nonviolent way.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    Groups up african americans began taking trips throughout the south because of a law that prohibits segregation in travel interstate places. They would get attacked by angry mobs of white people and would be beat. It was more than 1,000 white and black people participating in the freedom riders.
  • James Meridith

    James Meridith
    He is the first black student at the University of Mississipi. People did not take this well so as a result there were many riots and lots of violence causing President Kennedy to send 5,000 troops.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    200,000 people march on Washington to listen to Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech which changed some things and also empowered the people.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    This law prohibits discrimination of all kinds based on race, color, religion or natural origin. Also it provides the federal government with the power to enforce desegregation. President Johnson signed this.
  • March to Montgomery (Bloody Sunday)

    March to Montgomery (Bloody Sunday)
    They march to support voting rights but that does not last long because of police. They use tear gas and use clubs to beat them. 50 marchers were hurt so they were taken to the hospital. And this day was nicknamed "Bloody Sunday". But eventually voting rights do come through.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    This allows all people to vote, it was signed in by President Johnson. Literacy test and etc that prevented black people to vote were now also considered illegal. So there was no "catch" to voting.
