March on Washington
March led by Martin Luther King JR, trying to accomplish 6 goals: better housing, right to vote, integrated education, full and fair employment, meaningful civil rights laws and a federal works program. It is also the march where King gave his "I have a dream" speech. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
This act prohibited discrimination because of race, religion, gender and national origin. It also gave all citizens rights to enter public facilities. -
Selma Campaign
600 protestors set out for Montgomery to protest for voting rights. This march was televised and the nation watched as the protestors were beaten by the police. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
This act eliminated literacy tests and stated that federal examiners could enroll voters who had been denied suffrage. -
Dr. King Assassinated
While Dr. King was giving a speech, a man named James Earl Ray shot and killed him.
